First, drive through the village of Saint Mury Monteymond and take a small road towards Prélong.
The tarmac road ends at a large car park, but you can continue on a track and save 20 minutes. I have chosen to describe the hike from the end of the tarmac road.
(S) The route is well marked (with signs indicating the distance and time remaining) and red and white markings, as we are on a variant ofthe GR®54.
(1) After the car park, take a very good path on the left.
Leave the track. The climb is gentle until you reach the track, which you follow for about 300 metres.
(2) You will arrive at another car park. Leave the path that climbs to Pré Molard on your right and continue straight ahead on a good, almost horizontal path. After about 800 metres, the path becomes a trail and climbs very little, but becomes very stony and steep. Gradually, the direction changes and you head east, still in the forest. You begin to see the waterfalls at the bottom of the valley, and the slope becomes slightly steeper.
(3) At one point, leave a path that descends to the left towards Le Pleynet and continue straight ahead. Be careful when crossing scree slopes so as not to lose the path; follow the yellow or red and white markings carefully. The slope becomes much steeper until you reach the torrent that descends from Lac Blanc and the Freydane Glacier.
(4) Leave the path that leads to Pré Molard, La Pra and Lac du Crozet on your right, cross the stream on the footbridge and continue the ascent, which is gentle at first but then becomes much steeper, climbing to an altitude of 1,930 metres.
(5) Leave the paths that branch off to the right towards Lac Blanc or Col de la Mine de Fer and continue straight ahead for 100 metres to the refuge, which is manned during the summer season (usually until 15 September).
(6) From the refuge, descend via the same route to the car park (E).
