Description of the walk

To get to Val-d’Isère, follow signs for the Parc des Sports then take the small road south leading to the Manchet car park, at the foot of the Manchet chairlift.

(S/E) From the car park, continue straight on towards the ruined hamlet of Le Manchet.

(1) Continue straight on, leaving the return path on your left, cross the bridge and follow the path to the junction.

(2) Turn left onto the track leading to a water intake.

(3) Leave the track and take the small path on the right that climbs uphill.

(4) At the fork, continue straight ahead, leaving the path leading to Plan de l'Arselle on your left, and do the same at the next fork.

(5) Cross the footbridge over the Ruisseau des Fours and continue towards the refuge. Cross another footbridge.

(6) Leave the path on your left – which you will take on the way back – and go straight on. After a short descent and a ford, you will reach the Fond des Fours refuge, which is marked by its antenna.

(7) Continue south, then take a sharp left to rejoin the ascent path. The descent follows the same route.

(6) Follow the barely visible (unmarked) path to the right leading to the Chalet des Fours, which is clearly visible. After the chalet, follow the path to the other side of the Ruisseau du Cugnaï, which can easily be forded (in summer).

(8) Continue along this poorly marked but easy-to-follow path, and join a track leading to Plan de l’Arselle.

(9) Stay on the right bank of the Ruisseau des Fours and continue straight on to reach the ruined village of Le Manchet.

(1) Continue to the right to reach the car park where you started (S/E).

A very beautiful hike, fairly easy at first through the mountain pastures but quite strenuous for seniors like us (aged 77 and 78) to reach the refuge. Magnificent views. Excellent meal at the refuge. The Beaufort cheese omelette is worth the trip.

A lovely walk through stunning scenery, with marmots to be seen!
In terms of difficulty, do note that the final climb to the refuge (between points 6 and 7) is quite physically demanding, following a path carved into the rocks
Do take the time to meet the refuge wardens; they are very warm and welcoming
