Description of the walk

Park in the car park of the Brienne-la-Vieille Ecomuseum or Halle de Dienville

Yellow markings

(S/E) From the Ecomuseum car park, take the small access road and cross the D11b to turn slightly left onto the path that runs behind the church at Brienne-la-Vieille and joins the Grande Rue on the left.

(1) Follow the D443 to the right, staying on the right-hand pavement at first, before crossing at the edge of the village to join the path (an old Roman road) which heads left towards the countryside.

(2) Keep to the right to follow the old railway line straight ahead, first on a footpath and then on a wider track, changing sides of the line.

(3) At the crossroads, turn left and, after about 350 metres on a white track, take the first dirt track on the right to rejoin the old Roman road. Follow it to La Rothière.

(4) At the entrance to the village of La Rothière, cross the RD 396 (watch out for traffic: be careful) and follow it for about a hundred metres. Then take the path on the left called Rue Haute and pass the war memorial and the cemetery. Continue straight on until the first street on the right.

(5) At the inn, cross the RD 396 (watch out for traffic) and take the dirt track running parallel to the RD to the left. At the end, turn right towards the plain and cross it straight ahead.

(6) Keep left to follow the edge of the woodland that runs alongside the meandering River Aube and stay in the shade until you cross the woodland behind the Moulin Soufflet (a mill still in operation).

(7) On leaving the woods, keep left and then left again to pass in front of the factory. Continue straight on towards the village of Dienville, following Rue du Moulin and then Avenue Paul Girard.

(8) Turn left onto Ruelle du Château, walk past the castle and follow the beautiful tree-lined avenue towards the church, Avenue Jean Lanez.

(9) After Le Colombier, turn left in front of the church to cross the bridge over the Aube. After the bridge, turn right onto Rue du Val.

(10) Turn left into Ruelle aux Crapauds. At the top, turn right and follow the path straight on, which offers a view of Lac d’Amance as you stay close to the edge of the woods.

(11) Before reaching the D11b, take the last path on the right which goes straight down through the woods.

(12) Turn right again to avoid the RD by taking the Sentier des Brebis, then at the bottom, turn left.

(13) Take the D11b to the right to cross the bridge and head left to the Ecomuseum car park (S/E).

We went for a walk on Saturday 9 May, the day after a public holiday, in glorious sunshine and pleasant temperatures. Despite these ideal conditions, there were very few people out and about. We thoroughly enjoyed this route, three-quarters of which is unpaved. Admittedly, there are long straight stretches, but these are well balanced by the second half of the route, from marker 6 onwards, which is quite different. The remains of the railway line (between 2 and 3) and the monument to Napoleon just before 5 add a little something extra. Halfway between 10 and 11, we spotted a yellow marker that took us straight back to 13 through the woods. It isn’t exactly the marked route, but it’s a possible alternative.
If I had to find a fault with the route, it would be the 600 m after 1. You leave the village along the road, accompanied by the yapping, barking and growling of the neighbourhood dogs. I don’t know if private property restrictions prevent this, but from point 1, it would seem more pleasant to head due east to the old railway line, then turn right to reach point 2: I’m putting the idea forward to the route’s creator (PNR Forêt d’Orient).

A pleasant and easy walk.
There is little of note along the route, apart from: the superb, fish-filled Aube river, the very interesting sheep track, and the architecture of the villages you pass through.
It’s a shame that in places the path is littered with rubbish and runs past an open-air tip.
