The Salamander Trail in the Temple Forest

In the heart of the Forêt d’Orient Nature Park, this discovery trail explores aquatic habitats home to numerous wild species, including the salamander. It was established by the ONF and the Park.

This walk follows part of a route that explores the history of the Domaniale du Temple forest, the largest forest estate the Knights Templar ever owned in the West.

Description of the walk

Access to the car park on the Route forestière du Temple.

(S/E) Walk around the pond to reach (to the west) the sign describing the Salamander Trail. Enter the Temple Forest, heading north-east. You will soon find marker no. 1, then the following ones. Continue in the same direction, crossing the Ru de la Fontaine aux Oiseaux.

(1) Upon reaching the picnic area, turn left, heading north. The path then veers to the right. After marker 8, turn sharply right, heading south.

(2) Cross the forest track and follow a path south-east. After about fifty metres, turn right (south-west). Cross another forest track and continue south-west through the forest. Cross the Ru de la Fontaine aux Oiseaux again.

(3) At the T-junction, turn right. Take thefirst path on the left. The route becomes winding, sometimes following sections of paths that mark the boundaries of the plots. At the junction with the Route Forestière du Temple, turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The car park is 4 km from the Maison du Parc. Take the D 79 towards Vendeuvre-sur-Barse. After 2.5 km, turn left onto the Route forestière du Temple (for 1.5 km).

The Salamander Trail passes through a picnic area.
It is easy to follow the white and blue markings as well as the signposts or panels numbered 1 to 16 (approximately every 150 m).
Crossings over ditches and streams are always well maintained.

An illustrated guide, “Sentier des Salamandres”, is available at the Maison du Parc.

A short walk in the woods – no trouble finding our way. We only use the GPS, not the route description.
We met a few mushroom pickers. Locals who’d never seen a salamander before 😉

I have just amended the description to remove any ambiguity.

The access point is indeed at the car park on Route forestière du Temple.
This car park is 4 km from the Maison du Parc.

Hello,
We’ve just returned from a trip to the Forêt d’Orient Regional Nature Park.
Before setting off, we had downloaded the map and description of the ‘Sentier des Salamandres’ walk in the Forêt du Temple because the Park Visitor Centre was closed.
When we set out to do this walk, we read the description very carefully.
“Access to the car park from the Park Visitor Centre via the Temple forest road”. So we parked our car in the car park at the Park Visitor Centre.
“Go round the pond to reach the sign describing the Salamander Trail”.
There is indeed a pond near the Park House car park, but we couldn’t find the signpost. And for good reason.
We headed deep into the forest in a north-easterly direction! We couldn’t find any numbered signposts, and after an hour of wandering about, searching in vain for the right path or at least trying to get our bearings so we could find our way back to where we started.
Once back at the Maison du Parc car park, we met a guide who told us that the trail actually started 2 km from the Maison du Parc.

So I’ve decided to write to you to ask that you please review the description of this walk so that no one else makes the same mistake I did.
Thank you in advance
BM Villemin
