(S) Start at Place Bellecour. Head west, following the direction of traffic. You will already have views of Notre-Dame de Fourvière.
Cross the Pont Bonaparte (or Pont de Tilsit) and continue along Avenue Adolphe Max. At the end of the avenue, turn right and head north, passing in front of the Church of Saint-Jean. Take Rue Saint-Jean north. At the next crossroads, head west up Rue de la Bombarde (very beautiful Renaissance-style houses can be seen from a courtyard opening onto the street).
(1) When you reach Rue du Bœuf, follow it to the right for 10 metres, then turn left onto Montée des Chazeaux. Turn around from time to time to admire the view... and catch your breath on those damn steps!
At the top of Montée des Chazeaux, take a final flight of steps on the left, then follow Montée de Saint-Barthelemy for less than 100 metres.
(2) On your right, enter the Jardin du Rosaire, which winds its way to the foot of Notre-Dame-de-Fourvière. Take a break at the small rest areas along the way. Take your time, the climb is short and easy, and the view is magnificent.
(3) Below the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, enter the crypt through the "door of mercy" and take the internal staircase to exit at the basilica level.
South of the basilica, go down Rue Cardinal Decourtray, then follow Rue de l'Antiquaille to the entrance of the archaeological site park on your right. Enter the park.
(4) Ancient sites: if you are curious, read the sign about sound propagation in the amphitheatre. Head south to see the second, smaller ancient theatre and reach the street by walking along a Roman road.
Turn right to finish descending Rue de l'Antiquaille, pass Place des Minimes, a false roundabout, then walk up Rue de Trion for 150 metres. Finally, turn left to walk down Rue de l'Abbé Larue. The gate is open at the end.
(5) You will arrive at the Jardin des Curiosités, a green oasis offering a beautiful view of Lyon.
Return to Place des Minimes and go down to the roundabout via Rue des Farges, then turn right onto Montée du Gourguillon and finally Montée des Epies to reach the Saint-Georges district at the bottom.
Turn left onto Rue Saint-Georges and pass Saint-Jean Church again, then take Rue Saint-Jean, Rue Lainerie and Rue Vernay to reach Place Saint-Paulet.
(6) Start here to explore the streets leading to the Traboules.
