From Salers, go to Saint-Paul-de-Salers and then follow the signs for "Puy Violent" which lead to Vielmur (turn left in this hamlet), then to the car park at the start of the hike via a small, winding road with good visibility. Park on the right-hand side.
(S/E) Continue on foot through the cattle gate, either by opening it (and closing it behind you) or by using the ladder system that spans the fence to the left of the gate.
Follow the track that climbs gently through the meadow to the foot of Puy Violent.
(1) Leave the path on the left, which will be used on the way back, and go around Puy Violent on the right, still on the track.
(2) Leave the track and take the path that climbs up to the left along a fence to the summit of Puy Violent. The climb is a little steep but not very long.
(3) Summit of Puy Violent at 1,592 m (IGN). Begin the descent via the path lined with ropes (to protect the terrain). Be careful, as it can be slippery in wet weather as it is quite muddy!
(1) Take the track on the right to the car park (S/E) and continue straight downhill.
(4) At the Croix des Vachers, you can have a picnic on the table below the path.
Return to the track, cross it and climb up to the orientation table a few metres away.
(5) Once you have got your bearings, return to the track and climb back up to the car park (S/E)
