I did this hike twice this summer. The first time was a wonderful discovery, with a spectacular view as we emerged from the small forest at the start, followed by magnificent views of Puy Violent and the Monts Cantaliens.
In July, we saw lots of flowers, butterflies, a few raspberries and blueberries. In places, you walk on black lava flows, with a short, easy climb where you need to use your hands. A real treat.
The only difficulty was finding the way back. The descent into the forest is a little steep and the markings are not obvious, but Visorando was very useful and we met some other people who were also a little lost!
We weren't keen on the return trip, as the forest path wasn't very interesting with the view behind us. We decided to head back to the pass (the restaurant there is very good and the people are friendly).
So the second time, we did the round trip on the upper path, which was much nicer and more varied, but it was very, very hot, with very little shade in the first part, but under the trees it was also windy, which was great!
This is a great place to take children, they'll love it. There are quite a few places to picnic, some sheltered and some not.
