Description of the walk

From Le Lioran, take the D67, pass the Col de Cère, then take the small road on the right that goes up to Font de Cère, then to the Col de Font de Cère. Park your vehicle in the car park.

(S/E) Pass the Le Buron restaurant and the ski slopes on your right and continue to the crossroads.

(1) Take the GR® 4 - GR® 400, which climbs steeply to the left, until you reach an intersection at an altitude of 1525, with the Rombière chairlift arrival on your right.

(2) Ignore the pass a few metres away and take a sharp left turn (south-east). Climb through the pastures, going around a peak on the left. Then descend a short distance to the foot of Puy Griou.

(3) Climb the summit cone with caution: the very stony terrain (phonolite) is heavily eroded and there are several passages leading to the top. From the summit, there is a 360° panorama of the Monts du Cantal: to the south-east, the Plomb du Cantal; to the north-west, the Puy de Peyre Arse and the Puy Mary; and to the west, valleys and agricultural plains, including the Jordanne valley.

(4) Descend towards the base of the puy.

(3) Take the path on the left (north-east). Shortly afterwards, join the GR®400 and follow it as it continues. Stay on the path (north-east) until you reach the Rombière chairlift, which you passed earlier.

(2) Turn left (north) and head for the Col de Rombière.

(5) Continue right on the GR®4 and GR®400. You will reach a fork (altitude 1,530 m).

::6:: Leave the path that descends to the right at Buron de MeigeCoste. Continue straight ahead to the foot of the "Téton de Vénus".

(7) Turn sharply left towards the summit of Téton de Vénus.

::8:: Once at the summit, continue along the ridge to the summit of Puy de Bataillouse, where a beautiful panorama of the Monts du Cantal awaits you.

::9:: From the summit of this last Puy, retrace your steps to the previous fork (altitude 1,530 m).

::6:: Turn left towards Buron de Meige Costes.

(10) Pass the buron and continue downhill through the forest. You will come out onto a wide track.

::11:: Follow it to the right. Pass under the Rombière chairlift line to reach a crossroads (altitude 1236).

(12) Take the track that climbs to the right and rejoin the crossroads you took at the very beginning of the hike.

(1) Continue straight ahead and you will soon arrive at the car park (S/E).

Notes

Some sections are difficult to spot, especially where vegetation has reclaimed the area. A short climb with no technical difficulty during the ascent of Puy de Bataillouse.

There are no water sources on this hike.
Wear good walking shoes.
Binoculars are recommended.
Please note that in spring, the weather can be cool, even cold, on the Plombs du Cantal. Wear warm clothing.

A beautiful hike that I did twice in two months. The climb up Puy Griou is a little dizzying for the last 50 metres, but it's easier if you go around to the right. Be careful on the descent, as it can be tricky in places. Look for a trail from above before you start your descent.
Wear good shoes, as it is rocky and the phonolite is slippery.

Having already climbed Puy de Griou two days earlier, we decided to skip this section. At point 2, we reached Col de Rombière, then points 7 and 10, thus bypassing Puy Bataillouse to the south. Based on the comments, we decided that the climb was too difficult for us. Passing under the Téton de Vénus, we reached point 9 and continued on the GR 400 to the Bec de l'Aigle. We returned to point 10 in the rain and descended via the Buron de Meije Costes. A beautiful and varied hike that I highly recommend. Thank you to dd for this route.

Right from the start, it's a tough warm-up: it's a steep climb! But there are no other difficulties.
The route to the foot of Griou is very pleasant and varied, with splendid scenery. It may seem relatively long. And then the climb begins: from a distance it may seem dizzying, but you quickly realise that it isn't. However, the very stony path quickly divides and finding a way forward is not the easiest thing to do. We didn't complete the final stretch and stopped 10 metres before the summit, as one person was afraid of the rocks and, above all, in anticipation of the descent.
From there, we returned to point 6.
We avoided Puy Bataillouse and the ridges, on the advice of an experienced hiker, and reached Téton de Vénus via the GR 400.
We then descended via the Meige Costes buron and returned to the car park.
According to my GPS: 15 km, 825 m of elevation gain and nearly 6 hours of actual walking for us: but we don't run on the descents!
A magnificent hike, not to be missed, even without the ridges. Sumptuous landscapes, beautiful mountain atmosphere. To be done in good weather!

A very beautiful route without any major difficulties.
The first part of the route is quite busy, but it's really quiet between Bataillouse and Le Téton (a sublime section along the ridge).

The climb to Bataillouse is a little challenging as the path is poorly marked, narrow and requires some climbing. Those who are less comfortable with heights can continue to Le Téton de Venus by staying on the GR trail to avoid this section.

This is a beautiful route through the pastures of the Cantal region. Throughout this hike, the 360° panoramic views allow you to admire the beautiful mountainous countryside of the Monts du Cantal.
The ascents and descents are quite steep and rocky.
But I take the time to look around and stop for a few seconds to rest.
The distance covered is about 12 km, including breaks, in 5½ hours. I didn't climb Puy Griou, but I did climb Mont de Bataillou (I used a rope to climb a few metres) and Téton de Vénus before descending towards the Col du Fond de Cère.
That's enough for the first day of hiking.
I drove to the Fond de Cère pass before finding the trail again.
