Description of the walk

If you are coming from Aurillac, you first pass through Vic-sur-Cère, then Thiézac, then the Super-Lioran resort, unless you avoid it by taking the Lioran tunnel. Either at the tunnel exit or after the Super-Lioran resort, turn left into the village of Lioran.

If you are coming from Brioude or Saint-Flour, go through Murat, where you take the direction of Aurillac, and just before the entrance to the Lioran tunnel, turn right into the village of Lioran.
You can park in the Font d'Alagnon car park, which is located in a grassy hollow irrigated by the Alagnon stream and can be reached after crossing the village of Lioran via the main street.

(S/E) Head towards the village, going up the road towards the east. First, pass the private road on the left that leads to the hamlet of Font d'Alagnon, then you will find the start of the trail on the left.

(1) Climb the track on the left, at the entrance to which is a sign pointing towards "Le Téton de Vénus - Rocher du Bec de l'Aigle". After about 20 metres, in front of a house, take the track that climbs to the left and soon overlooks the hamlet of Font d'Alagnon. This track soon joins a forest track that goes around the Font d'Alagnon basin.

(2) Take this track on the right for 200 metres until you reach a new track on the left marked "Téton de Vénus".

(3) Take this track and climb for about 800 metres, making sure you don't take a wrong turn.

(4) Take another fork to the left, still following the signs for Téton de Vénus. Climb fairly steeply through the forest for about 350 m, then you will arrive at a grassy moorland with broom and gentian, with a view of the Rocher du Bec de l'Aigle. You can't go wrong, as the path leads directly there.

Go around the rock on the left, still following the path, then climb the same path, which becomes very rocky, to reach the rock formation. Continue climbing to reach the summit, from where you can see the Téton de Vénus and the path leading to it, again with no risk of getting lost.

Further on, leave the main path on the right at a fence and follow the secondary path that leads directly to the summit of Téton de Vénus.

Once at the summit, you can head west towards Puy Bataillouse and reach Col de Rombière via its ridges. We chose to descend south to rejoin the main trail and take it to the right towards the south-west, along the southern slope of Puy Bataillouse.

Leave the path that descends to the Meige Costes buron on your left and head for the Col de Rombière. There you will find theGR® 4, which you follow south towards Puy Griou.

(5) When you reach the upper station of the Rombière chairlift, turn left towards the south-east onto the track that descends slightly towards the Col de Font de Cère.

(6) Whether you take the track or the path on the right that runs parallel to it, you will still find yourself heading towards Font de Cère. We stayed on the somewhat rocky track, corresponding tothe GR® 4, to reach the Col de Font de Cère.

(7) Instead of taking the road that descends to Font d'Alagnon, take the path on the left that first descends into a meadow and then through woods. After a wide circular loop to the left, this path joins the track that goes around the Font d'Alagnon basin.

(8) Take this very good track on the right, and when you reach the paved road after about 500 m, turn left and you will soon cross the Alagnon via a small bridge.

After the bridge, you will quickly return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The main difficulty of this route lies in the climb among the rocks of Bec de l'Aigle, whose pyroclastic nature (volcanic debris of varying sizes, more or less aggressive, encased in a matrix of hardened volcanic ash) justifies the wearing of well-reinforced footwear. The rest of the route is on surfaces that present no difficulty.
Walking poles recommended.

Worth a visit

If you want to shorten the hike, you can descend via the Meige Costes buron.

If you want to extend it, from the upper station of the Rombière chairlift you can go to Puy Griou, which you can climb via a path to the north-east, then descend to the Col de Font de Cère via the Vacherie du Griou.

Throughout the hike, you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the various peaks, ridges and valleys of this part of the Cantal.

A very beautiful hike, but be careful: there is a very tricky section before you reach Bec de L'Aigle, where you will need to put your hands on the ground.
Not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo! Give this area priority when climbing.

Hike with quite a bit of elevation gain, more "difficult" than "moderate" in terms of difficulty.

Very beautiful hike. For the time, perhaps indicate 4 hours. It should be noted, however, that the climb to the Bec de l'Aigle is quite difficult and that you need to use your hands in some places. This is to avoid unpleasant surprises for average hikers who are not very fit.

Just five trail runners on the ridges and families on the wide path back home.
