Walks through the legends of the Phalempin Forest

A few kilometres from Lille lies a green oasis: the Phalempin Forest. Although modest in size (670 hectares), this forest is a rejuvenating place for hiking. Despite its small size, the forest boasts great biodiversity and legends. Once upon a time, in the village of La Neuville, on the edge of the Phalempin Woods, there was an inn called Leu Pindu with an unusual sign. It's up to you to discover the rest!

Description of the walk

To get to the starting point, head towards Phalempin (59133) and park in the station car park on Rue Léon Blum

(S/E). Head north, then turn right onto Avenue Péchon and cross the railway line at the level crossing. Stay on Avenue Péchon and follow the GR®121B (red and white markings). Take the bridge over the A1 motorway and continue for another 150 metres on the D62a.
Please note that the D62a is lined with wooden safety barriers at this point. Stay well behind this barrier.

(1) At the end of the left-hand barrier, leave the D62a and take a path heading north-east (please note that there are no GR® markings indicating the change of direction; you will find these red and white markings a little further on, painted on the trees).
Stay on this GR® for 5.8 km, following the markings carefully (at each intersection and change of direction, the markings are clearly visible and crossed out with a yellow cross on the paths to be avoided).

(2) At the edge of the woods, you will find yourself on a tarmac forest road called Drève Goffart. Head east for 110 metres until you reach a barrier. At the barrier, continue south-east along Rue du Pluich. Cross the hamlet called Le Plouich and continue in this direction for 350 metres until you reach a riding centre.

(3) Then turn left (north-east) onto the Wagriaux country lane. Go through the barrier and continue in this direction for 600 metres until you reach the edge of the woods on the tarmac Genne lane.

(4) Turn right towards the south-east onto Rue de Neuville, which passes through fields, leaving theGR® 121B on your left to follow thePR® (yellow markings). Continue until you reach the junction with the D8.

(5) At the intersection with the D8, turn right and then immediately left onto the path located at the exit sign for the hamlet of Le Petit Attiches.
Please note that from here on, the yellow markings are completely random or even non-existent.
Follow this path along the edge of the woods with the yellow markings until you reach a crossroads in a clearing.

(6) At the clearing, follow the path on the left, which is blocked by a sign prohibiting access to horse riders. Continue along this path following the edge of the woods for 1.5 km. Be careful, the path is quite muddy and there are no more markings from the clearing onwards, but as there is only one path, you cannot go wrong.

(7) At the end of the path, when you start to see buildings in the distance, turn south-west at a hairpin bend to join the tarmac road called Drève d'Attiches.
On the Drève d'Attiche forest road, head north-west and continue in this direction for 900 metres.

(8) Turn left towards the south-west. (Please note that there are no signs indicating this path, but it is the only path with a sign indicating that dogs must be kept on a leash, as you are passing through a tree-top adventure park).

Continue until you reach the first equipment of the Chloro-Fil tree-top adventure park. White signs visible from a distance will show you the way to the reception area. Follow these signs to reach the park entrance and then a roundabout: the Leu Pindu roundabout. Pass to the right of the Leu Pindu restaurant (not without noticing the façade and the legend surrounding the place).

(9) Take the forest path on the left of the D8, which indicates the entrance to the Phalempin National Forest (a barrier prevents vehicle access). Continue straight ahead in a north-westerly direction to pass in front of the Château de l'Ermitage. Continue straight ahead on the path, still following the north-westerly direction. Pass between the ponds visible on either side of the path to reach a crossroads with the Dréve Noire. Cross the crossroads and continue north-west.

(10) Turn right onto the path heading north-east to rejoin the D62a. Back on the D62a, turn left to reach Phalempin and the car park (S/E).

Too many routes that cross each other and give contradictory and misleading directions. The map says turn left at the location, but the arrow points to the right, etc.
Another anomaly: a yellow sign, a cross, you move forward and you find a yellow arrow pointing in the right direction... so the information on the map and on the ground is useless.

Beautiful walk but no signposts at all when you reach point 4. After point 7, the path is practically non-existent, so you have to make your way through nettles and brambles, otherwise it's a peaceful walk in the woods.

It is preferable to park in the forest to avoid the noisy and pointless trip to and from the station.
The trail is sometimes unmarked.
At this time of year, the canopy provides pleasant shade to escape the heat.
Please note that the entrances and exits of the small paths are not cleared, perhaps to prevent walkers from entering the forest. Perhaps also to protect the flora and fauna. As a result, there are many brambles and several fallen trees that greatly hinder progress.
It is therefore advisable to wear trousers and potentially recommended to avoid taking young children and elderly people on anticoagulants because of the brambles!

Quite a nice hike.
Some paths were very muddy, so we took side paths to avoid getting mud up to our ankles.
As a result, we got lost several times, but it was easy to find our way back.
The signage for the tree climbing course needs to be improved.
We parked in the Péchon car park as recommended in previous reviews, and we would also recommend this.
To conclude: make sure you wear good waterproof shoes and trousers that are thick enough to protect you from the brambles.

Nice walk, shame that the start (and end) are a bit noisy (you walk alongside the A1 motorway!).
You can also park a little further away on Avenue Péchon, in the carpool car park... ;-)
Be careful not to get "lost" in the tree-climbing area, or you'll have to turn back, which is what we had to do... :-(

Beautiful hikes, quite interesting but probably quite technical given the weather conditions. Extremely muddy trails and very dense vegetation making some passages tricky and acrobatic. The trail between points 6 and 7 splits into two (at least it seems to) at the end, and I must have taken the wrong direction. I couldn't find point 8, but again this was due to the excessive vegetation caused by the heavy rain over the last few days.

First of all, I found that starting the hike from the station car park was unnecessary. There is no shortage of parking spaces on the way to the forest, which would save at least 1 km of unnecessary walking (there and back).
Otherwise, the trail is virtually unmarked. Using the app is therefore essential.
I cannot comment on the route description (not used).
As stated, waterproof footwear is recommended as the small connecting paths are very muddy and full of brambles and nettles (due to recent rain).
Some sections of the route are relatively dangerous, but fortunately they are very short.
Please note that to leave the forest, you have to climb over a log barrier (not very high).

A very pleasant route, almost entirely through forest.

However, between markers 6 and 7, the route shown on the map is actually that of a small stream. The path is slightly offset and follows a slightly different route. This may cause some confusion.

(I cannot comment on the reliability of the description as I do not use it, preferring to follow the route using geolocation on my mobile phone.)
