Slag heaps 116–117, 10 in Oignies

A route that takes you from the former 9-9bis pit in Oignies, with its renovated buildings that will transport you back several decades. You will then cross the Bois de Gosse and stop at the wildlife observatory. The landscape will take on a more lunar appearance as you climb the slag heap, before finally returning to the pit via the old mining sidings (rail tracks).

Description of the walk

To reach the car park, set your satnav for “9-9bis, Rue du Tordoir, Oignies”

(S/E) From the car park, head back to Rue du Tordoir and head south towards the long, plateau-shaped slag heap. Follow the street for 400m and turn left onto Rue Claude Debussy, then turn right onto Rue Samuel Goulet.

(1) At the end of the street, go through the gate and take the path on the left. Walk alongside the gardens of the houses for a few metres, then head into the woods.

(2) At the junction, take the straight path on the left and follow it for about 300 metres. When you reach a more open area, turn right onto the path that heads almost in the opposite direction. Walk past a sports ground and follow a wide, straight path between two rows of trees. Go through the gate and follow the path for about 200m.

(3) At the three-way junction with three paths ahead of you, take the one on the right. About 100 metres further on, on your right, is a wildlife observatory.

Continue along the path after the observatory, turn left and then stay on the path as it curves to the right to reach the foot of the slag heap.

(4) Walk around it in a clockwise direction. Follow this path for about 1 km.

(5) When you reach the western end, turn right then left onto a smaller path leading up the slag heap. At the top (viewpoint), head back down the same path and, before the end of the descent, turn right to complete the walk around the slag heap

(6) At the junction with a wide path, go straight on. Follow this straight path to a viewpoint, then retrace your steps slightly and take the staircase leading down to your left.

Turn left, then immediately left again; the path crosses a section of woodland, not far from the houses, then moves away from them by turning left.

Then leave the woodland and turn right to return to the pithead of pit 9-9bis (large open area). Cross the pithead and head back towards the headframes (metal towers), the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Variations

Option to extend the walk and climb slag heap 110 once you reach the plain.

You can shorten the walk and head straight to the (2) and (3) by going straight on at the junction

Make the most of it by stopping off at the 9-9bis information centre and popping in to see what’s on at the Métaphone.

You are in protected areas, listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites; please take your rubbish with you, and observe but do not disturb the flora and fauna so unique to the mining basin.

Bring your binoculars and camera for the viewpoints.

You are in a historic site; respect its heritage and discover the traces of the past.

Worth a visit

If you want to join the “UNESCO Slope Challenge” (51 slopes to climb) or just for fun, you can take a selfie at the top of the slag heap and share it with #terrilmania and @terrilmania on Instagram or by email at defiterril@gmail.com.

You can also add your own stone to the cairn (pile of stones) at the top of the slag heap and leave a lasting mark of your visit to the summit.

A nice hike. A small update to the route would be welcome, due to construction work.

It is not possible to complete the route because, due to major works on the path leading to the entrance of the Bois de Gosse, this route is closed until further notice. It is therefore not possible to climb the slag heap. This route is closed indefinitely.

When we left the viewpoint, we couldn’t find the path we were looking for, so we took a parallel path

We went for a walk at the end of the day, so there weren’t many people around.

A lovely spot in the countryside and a mining site well worth exploring.

Hello
We explored the site this morning on a trail discovery walk; there’s a lack of signposting to indicate the starting point, and the same applies along the route... at one point we found ourselves facing some fences... otherwise, it’s a great site
We’re planning to do all the TERRILS trails
Thanks
Alain

A pleasant walk offering a variety of scenery. It makes you want to explore the other trails you come across along the way (in the Bois de Gosse or on the slag heap).
