A walk in the Louisfert area

An easy walk in the countryside of the writer René-Guy Cadou. Pleasant paths through the countryside, passing close to Caratel Castle.

Description of the walk

Leaving Châteaubriant, head towards Saint-Nazaire. At the first roundabout, turn left towards Louisfert. Drive into the village and park in the Town Hall car park on Rue de l’Espérance.

(S/E) Leave the car park on the left and head towards Place de l’Église. Turn left in front of the church and continue towards the wayside cross. Turn right onto Rue du Paty. Cross Rue de la Grée and continue straight on along a path until you reach the edge of a woodland.

(1) Take a path on the left which skirts round the woodland on the left; stay on the edge and walk alongside the woodland on your right. You’ll come out onto a small road.

(2) Follow it to the right. You’ll cross another road on the right-hand side and, after about a hundred metres, look out for the start of a path on the left.

(3) Turn left onto this path and walk alongside a woodland on your left. At the T-junction, turn left. Turn right with the path and pass under a high-voltage power line; shortly afterwards, you’ll reach another T-junction.

(4) Follow a wider track to the left. At the next junction, turn left and pass under the high-voltage power line again. Continue for about a hundred metres.

(5) At the next junction, first turn left then right to take a small road running parallel to the high-voltage power line. Turn left and continue to a road near the hamlet of Clos de L’Épine. Follow the small street opposite. When you reach an electricity substation, look out for the start of a path on the left

(6) Take this path, cross a road and continue along the road opposite for about a hundred metres.

(7) Take the path on the right. Pass under the high-voltage power lines and cross a road. At the next junction, turn left. You’ll come out onto a road.

(8) Follow it to the right and immediately cross a road running at right angles to it. Immediately afterwards, turn left onto a path running parallel to the road you have just crossed. You will rejoin the road further on and follow it as it continues. Pass under a high-voltage power line once more and you will soon reach a junction.

(9) Turn left here. When the road bends to the right, carry on straight ahead along the path until you reach the junction in front of Caratel Castle.

(10) Take the road on the left. At a place called Le Bois Vert, turn right. The tarmac soon gives way to a track on the minor road. Pass under two high-voltage power lines.

(11) Immediately afterwards, and just before a stream, turn left onto a footpath. At a Fork in the road, turn right. Return to the tarmac and pass through the hamlet of La Riftière. Join the D46 and follow it to the left for about 150 m.

(12) At the junction, turn right and pass through the hamlet of La Gauffrière. Continue straight on until the next junction.

(13) First turn left then right onto a footpath. Head straight on towards the north. Further on, rejoin the tarmac road and continue straight on. You’ll come out onto Rue de L’Espérance; follow it to the right until you reach the town hall car park (S/E).

Hello,
A really lovely walk, with plenty of sheltered paths – easy and straightforward.
Following in the footsteps of RG Cadou, you can just picture the poet walking these paths when he was a schoolteacher in Louisfert. A brief glimpse of Caratel Castle along the way.
A delightful little walk.
We highly recommend it.
Nadège and Patrick Bretéché.
