Pointe d'Autigny from Abondance

A pretty little summit with extensive views, which we recommend climbing via the Abondance side. Beautiful views of the Cornettes de Bise and the north face of Mont Chauffé, as well as Lake Geneva.

Description of the walk

Departure from Le Sauvage (car park in the forest). At the upper exit of the village of Abondance (towards Châtel), take the small steep road on the left that leads to Le Mont. Pass the hamlet of Le Mont, turn right and park in the forest at Le Sauvage.

Directional signs are posted at major intersections.

(S/E) From the car park, take a track heading west towards the Col de La Plagne and the Chalets d'Autigny. Stay on this main track, heading generally west, roughly parallel to the high-voltage power line shown on the map (ignore three successive turnings on the left). The track is steep, sometimes very steep; it winds its way through meadows and undergrowth and joins the base of the Crête Ouest du Mont Chauffé. A final steep climb takes you to the Col de La Plagne (cross).

(1) Continue along the track, from where you can see the first chalets of Autigny. Descend slightly then climb again to reach the Chalets d'Autigny via a final steep section: the summit is then clearly visible to the north-west.

(2) Cross the group of chalets and continue along a path that climbs up the hillside through pastures, heading west-northwest. Go through a few gates that allow pedestrians to pass but not livestock. Go around a grove of spruce trees and pass under a high-voltage power line.

(3) Just after the signpost, turn right onto a steep path. Follow a few switchbacks to reach the Trois Croix. Continue in the same direction on the plateau and you will soon reach the summit (orientation table).

(4) Return via the same route to the place known as Le Sauvage (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are recommended. In April, it is common to find snow between the Col de la Plagne (1) and the Chalets d'Autigny (2), but in general, the route remains easy to follow. At this same time of year, there may be residual snowfields on the summit.

Water is available shortly before the Col de la Plagne (but bring your own supplies). Shelter is available at the Chalets d'Autigny (but there is no known accommodation).

A 1:25,000 map is required (at least the one accompanying this description).

Alternative starting point:
It is also possible to climb Pointe d'Autigny from Ubine. In summer, the route from Ubine is more pleasant. However, as the Ubine road is closed in winter and until the end of April, the ascent from Abondance is a good alternative in late autumn or spring. In winter, the climb to the Chalets d'Autigny is a route to be taken on snowshoes.

The author has completed this hike three times, the first on 25 April 2002 and the last on 23 April 2015.

Worth a visit

From the Chalets d'Autigny to the summit, there is a beautiful view of the north face of Mont Chauffé, an impressive vertical limestone wall, and the Cornettes de Bise. There is also a beautiful panorama of the surrounding mountains and Lake Geneva.

The Chalets d'Autigny are generally well renovated and are a pleasant place to stop. Some are alpine chalets that are open from mid-June to mid-September.

Done on 11 March. Lots of snow on the second half and especially on the summit. It's not exposed, but the trail on the final ascent was not very marked. A bit tiring without snowshoes 😄
Beautiful, gentle summit with a lovely view.

Superb hike: breathtaking views at La Pointe with a beautiful orientation table. No difficulty. We made our way back via the hamlet of Ubine, the Col d'Ubine, which was a little steep on the descent to the Mens chalet, Chevenne and finally La Chapelle d'Abondance. About twenty kilometres and quite a few elevation changes, but we were happy.

The chalets and the summit are sublime. One small downside is the very wide, drivable track (I saw a 4×4 and a tractor) and the high-voltage power line, which is very noticeable in the photos. Thank you.

Hello lamre13, and thank you for your feedback!

Indeed, from Abondance to the Chalets d'Autigny, you follow an alpine trail that is occasionally used by vehicles.

An alternative, still practicable at this time of year, is to climb up to the chalets from the Ubine valley (hike published on Visorando). This route follows only a mountain pasture or forest trail.

The main attraction of this hike is the splendid 360° view from the summit. Most of the route is accessible by car (not very pleasant).
