Cornettes de Bise from Chevenne

A common route to the Cornettes de Bise when staying in the upper Abondance Valley. A long route with elevation gain, leading to a magnificent setting. From the summit, the highest in the region along with the neighbouring Mont de Grange (2,432 m), there is a superb panorama of Lake Geneva, the Chablais peaks, the Swiss Alps and the Mont Blanc massif.

N.B. Route within a protected natural area: see recommendations in the practical information section.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Chevenne chalets (car park at the end of the road leading up from La Chapelle-d'Abondance).

Directional signs + marker posts with yellow arrows

(S/E) From the car park, head north on a wide path towards the Col de Vernaz. Cross to the right bank of the Ruisseau de Chevenne and continue north-northeast.

(1) At a fork, turn right onto a path (leaving the wide path that goes left towards Crêt Pèzerin). Stay parallel to the stream, then move away from it and, after a few hairpin bends, reach the Col de Vernaz.

(2) From the pass, head north towards La Calaz and climb a wide grassy ridge via numerous switchbacks (steep slope). This will take you to the La Calaz chalet.

(3) Then turn left (north-west) and continue climbing through the mountain pastures and directly below the Saix de la Calaz and then the Rochers de Chaudin. You will reach a small pass (the Pas de Chaudin) with yellow Swiss directional signs.

(4) Continue west towards the Cornettes de Bise. Climb between rocks and sharp limestone pavements to reach the base of the summit pyramid. Turn right and, after several hairpin bends, reach the summit.

(5) Return via the same route to the Chevenne chalets (S/E).

From Chevenne at 1,215 metres, it's a (too) long climb through uninteresting mountain pastures to the Vernaz Pass at 1,815 metres. After that, you follow the ridge and enjoy a magnificent panorama all the way to Les Cornettes.
On the descent, from the Toper mountain pasture, there is a forest road made for 4x4s; large stones roll under your shoes, which is very dangerous despite my walking sticks. When I arrived in Chevenne, my legs were exhausted and the soles of my shoes were coming off.
I do not recommend this route for families or people who are not very fit.
To get to Les Cornettes de Bise, I recommend starting from Sevan Devant at an altitude of 1,600 metres, heading towards Lake Arvouin and then the Col de Vernaz. It's less tiring and there are some very pretty sites along the way that the whole family will enjoy.

A very nice walk at the end of May. From the car park, it's a steep climb. At point 1, we stayed on the carriage road, the track going straight ahead, but remember we're in a protected natural area. The tetras are trying to survive in this area, and the track passes through one of the few woods in the area. As far as Chalets La Callaz, the gradient is steep but doesn't pose any problems. The crossing of the Plan Berger becomes a little more challenging. (There are still some passages in the snow that need a bit of attention.) Once we reach the summit, the 360 gives us a view of almost the whole of Lake Geneva, with Mont Blanc on the opposite side! (The weather was very favourable on 30 May!) We decided to change the route on the way back, passing from point 2 towards the Col de Resse and the chalets of the same name. Back to the car park via the Plan de Resse. The descent was a little steeper, but it was undergrown and on a path that was less monotonous than a 4x4 track. It took us just under 4 hours to reach the summit, but there was a significant difference in elevation. Not necessarily a walk to do with children, unless they are used to a slightly long and sustained effort. A loop via the Pas de la Bosse is possible, but with some airy and unsafe sections.

Lovely walk, thank you for sharing.
From the car park, the Cornettes are signposted. It says it takes 4 hours to get there, which I think is quite accurate.
The last 200 metres of elevation gain (from Pas de Chaudin) are not easy on the sharp limestone pavement and rocks, but the effort is worth it once you reach the top.
Like many others, we saw "herds" of ibex before Pas de Chaudin. A beautiful hike that took 7 hours and 10 minutes there and back, with a slight change at the end: we followed the Toper chalet trail to the car park to spare our knees rather than taking the small path along the stream
Thank you to Netra for posting this.

I was finally able to climb the Cornettes de Bise without any vertiginous passages.
A very pretty and varied hike, and what a view at the summit! I encountered lots of ibex, marmots and even a griffon vulture.

Enjoy your hike, the elevation gain is manageable and there are many ibexes
. Walking sticks are useful for the descent.

Hike with beautiful views and a 360° panorama at the summit overlooking Lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains.
In good weather, take at least 2 litres of water per person. The climb is quite steep and, from the Col Chaudin (2,250 m), the rocky section is a little more difficult, especially for those who are not used to it. However, there are no major difficulties and the reward is at the summit with its exceptional panorama. One of the most beautiful hikes in the region.
On the way back down to the Col Chaudin, I was lucky enough to see a mountain goat up close, which let me take its picture.

A superb hike in good weather, with exceptional views from the summit over numerous Alpine peaks and Lake Geneva. The climb is easy, with no technical or exposed sections, and is suitable for children with a little stamina and used to walking. Allow 2½ to 3 hours for the ascent and 1½ to 2 hours for the descent. You may see ibex up close, which are not shy, from 2,000 metres and from the Callaz refuge. I highly recommend this hike. It may be interesting to do the circular route by descending on the other side.

Hello Etienne
Thank you for these clarifications
We city dwellers find it difficult to distinguish between these species, but we are always delighted to encounter them
Best regards

A beautiful route rewarded by magnificent views at the summit. When climbing, follow the description carefully, leaving the trail to follow the stream on the right. Ibex on the Swiss side, seeking the coolness of the snowfields, and a dozen griffon vultures near the summit. A short hike that can be done in half a day. A must-do!

Hello mdutour, and thank you for your comments and appreciation!

I may be wrong, but I think these are ibex that you were able to get so close to, not chamois. It's rare to see chamois up close, and they are very shy (they are hunted). Ibex, on the other hand, are a protected species and therefore not hunted, so they allow you to get very close to them... Sometimes you have to "ask" them to move off the path so that you can pass. There are large populations of ibex in the Cornettes de Bise area.

From the Chevenne car park to the pass, there is a wide path of little interest, but from the pass onwards, the atmosphere becomes increasingly mountainous. We have rarely been able to get so close to so many chamois, which are not very shy. the summit of Cornettes de Bise seems inaccessible from below, but in fact, you make fairly quick progress and the 1,200 m elevation gain is no problem with a little training. Still, it's a bit long for families with young children. The end of the route is quite exposed, running along precipices, but there are no particular difficulties. The view from the summit is impressive: Lake Geneva, the Swiss Alps and Mont Blanc are all visible. The descent is not easy and more tiring than the ascent, as the paths are strewn with small slippery stones, so sturdy shoes are essential. Signposting is OK.

A magnificent route, climbing up to the Col de Verne, La Calaz, then descending via the Pas de la Bosse – a very beautiful circular.
Glad I did it this way, the climb was less strenuous.
Superb panorama, unfortunately without any ibex or other wildlife.

A very beautiful hike. For a change, we descended via the Resse chalets and Plan de Resse, but this was a mistake! It's not worth it: the trail is poorly marked and the scenery is unremarkable.
The descent is quite tiring, so take care of your joints from the start.

After a monotonous climb to the "Chalets Toper", the landscape becomes increasingly majestic.
The last part of the climb is among large boulders and requires a little more attention.
Your efforts will be richly rewarded with a 360° panorama (bring something to cover up with as it can get cold). The descent was accompanied by choughs and ibex.
For the final section, you can leave the track and descend to the car park via a small signposted path.
