Parking is available opposite the town hall in the centre of Plaimbois-Vennes after the church.
(S/E) Leave the village with the church behind you. At the village exit, at the Calvary, turn left down Route du Moulin towards Pierrefontaine-les-Varans and Gigot. View of Pierrefontaine and the Reverotte valley.
(1) At the first bend, when the road enters the woods, leave it and continue straight ahead along a stony path (signposted Belvédère de Pierre Lamadou). Even when the path becomes a dirt track, the viewpoint over the Reverotte valley is at the end of the field.
(2) Walk up the field towards the new house and, especially if the grass is tall, walk carefully along the edge of the cliff. Pass between the house and a farm shed to reach the road. Turn left and walk along the shed.
(3) At the first fork, go down to the left (towards Moulin de Vermondans) and 400 m further on, turn right at the second fork (yellow-blue markings).
(4) The path enters the woods. Be careful! After about 250 metres, look for and take a small, discreet path on the left marked with a sign for Moulin de Vermondans. This path is then well marked. It leads you through picturesque undergrowth, framed by small wild canyons. Be careful, as the path is steep and slippery. When you see a pasture, veer to the right to find the sign, which is not very well placed. When the path stops descending, it becomes straight and grassy with a few ruts filled with water. You will soon be greeted by the sound of the waterfall.
(5) You will reach the waterfall and a tarmac road which you can follow downhill for 300 metres to visit the Moulin de Vermondans (or what remains of it). Head back up towards the waterfall and turn right. There are a few viewpoints between the fir trees overlooking the wild Reverotte gorges.
(6) After two consecutive bends (S-bends), descend to the right along the stony path, ignoring the sign and marker inviting you to take the tarmac road that climbs back up towards Plaimbois-Vennes. The path you take will be marked (yellow-blue) sparingly, but follow it calmly until you reach a fork at a hunting car park
(7). Leave this path and take the uphill track on the left, even though a half-faded cross invites you to turn back.
(8) At another fork (ONF sign No. 21), keep left. 500 metres further on, there is another fork; this time, take the right-hand path, which runs alongside a pasture.
(9) When the path turns into a hairpin bend and begins a steep climb, look for a sign for the mountain bike route No. 44 and follow the directions. You will come out into pastureland and will need to open (and close properly, as I encountered cattle) a gate to continue along the path. Do the same when you reach a small tarmac road, which you follow straight on until you reach the D240 and Plaimbois and the car park on the left
(10). If the church is open, take the time to visit two beautiful statues (S/E).
The route includes cliff paths and unsecured viewpoints. Walking sticks and good shoes are necessary, as some sections are steep and slippery.
