Description of the walk

Coming from Bellegarde, just before entering the village of Menthières, turn right onto the Grand Crêt d’Eau forest road until you reach the Charnaz car park.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head up into the forest towards Sous les Crêts via theGRP® Grand Tour de la Valserine. You’ll reach a crossroads.

(1) Turn right towards the Chalet de Varambon, which you can already see.

(2) Walk past the chalet and head back into the forest. Join the forest track at the Sous Varambon car park.

(3) Continue straight on, following the GRP®. At the Fork in the road, leave the forest road leading to the antennas and turn left, heading uphill towards La Charmante.

(4) Turn left at a 90° angle to climb up to La Sorgia d’en Haut via the GRP®.

(5) Leave theGRP® to join theGR®9/GR®509by turning left and heading uphill. Enjoy the views as you pass between the various ridges. You’ll reach a T-junction before the Crêt de l’Éguillon.

(6) Leave theGR®9/GR®509by turning left. You can take a look at the Pierre à Fromage, which is on your left below the path. Take theGRP® again. Return to the crossroads you passed on the way out.

(1) Continue straight ahead along the path in the opposite direction to the outward journey, following theGRP®, and you will reach the car park (S/E).

A lovely walk through forests and over hilltops. Views of Mont Blanc and the Rhône Valley. Not very busy at the end of September.

A walk offering beautiful scenery on the Jura side and then on the Pays de Gex side, with views of the Salève and Mont Blanc. The route is fairly easy. Definitely worth a go.
Please be aware of the wildlife sanctuary. Between 15 December and 30 June, part of the route is closed (between point 2, the Varambon chalet, and point 3, the car park below Varambon). You will need to take a short detour to rejoin the tarmac road.

We did the route, which offers stunning views of Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc, on a very windy day and found shelter for our lunch break at the Chalet du Sac, which isn’t included in the suggested route but is easily reached from the Pierre à Fromage, heading towards the Col du Sac. It was a lovely surprise that we really appreciated that day.
