Description of the walk

From Bellegarde, take the Valserine valley (towards Lélex) to Confort. Turn right onto a road that climbs to the Menthières resort. When you reach the plateau at the Château, take the small road on the right that climbs southwards into the forest. At the hairpin bend, continue straight on along the Route du Sorgia (narrow forest road) and park at the junction with the pastoral road leading to Varambon.

(S/E) Continue along the road to a car park at an altitude of 1373m (from where it descends towards some antennas) then continue along the same path which leads to the mountain pasture.
Before it descends again at an altitude of 1,384 m, turn left, heading due east, to climb towards Sorgia d'en Haut.

(1) Here, the path becomes flat. Continue climbing to the left through the valley via paths that join theGR® trail coming from Sorgia at various heights. Follow it to climb up the valley and reach a flat area.
When the path veers left towards Crêt du Milieu, at an altitude of 1,526 metres, leave it on the right and climb up a wide curve above a pond towards Crêt du Miroir. Cut across the path coming from Chalet Bizot and continue straight up the slope towards the clearly visible Crêt du Miroir. There is no path, but there are tracks to follow, making the best of the terrain on grassy slopes that remain easy to walk on.
This will take you to Crêt du Miroir, the easternmost point of Crêt d'Eau.

(2) Descend westwards down the grassy slope to reach the path you crossed on the way up. Take it to the right until you reach theGR® coming from the left, which you left earlier.
Note: at this point, those wishing to shorten the hike can follow theGR® trail to the right, which leads directly to Crêt de la Goutte.
From the junction, head west up the slope, following the tracks rather than the path, keeping as close as possible to the contours of the terrain to stay on the grassy slopes and avoid the exposed rocks. You will reach the Crêt du Milieu ridge.

(3) From the summit, descend north along the ridge, then when it veers to the right, descend straight down the grassy slopes, keeping Crêt de la Goutte in your sights. You will reach a threshold where you will need to climb back up (altitude 1500m): veer to the right to rejoin theGR® trail.
Take it to the left to climb to the highest point of the massif.
The summit of Crêt de la Goutte has an orientation table.

(4) After enjoying the view, begin the descent to the north, first almost level and then along a grassy ridge that leads to the Pierre à Fromage, at the foot of Crêt de l'Equillon. There (altitude 1508m), turn sharply left to descend gently towards the west, following theGRP® Grand Tour de la Valserine. You will reach a major crossroads where a path arrives from the right from Crêt des Frasses.

(5) Turn left to descend the wide Varambon valley to the imposing chalet, which is clearly visible.
Pass in front of the chalet to take the right pastoral track leading to it.
At the bottom of the valley, the track turns left to enter the forest and rejoin the starting point at the same level, with a slight climb (altitude 1362m).
It is more interesting to leave this track here and take a path that continues down the valley and enters the forest. It descends diagonally to the right and then, at a crossroads, turns left towards the south to rejoin the uphill road (altitude 1275m).
Turn left to climb back up the road for 10 minutes to the car park (S/E).

Notes

This circular is accessible to all. It is not rated as easy but medium simply because some sections are off-trail (ascent and descent of the Crêts du Miroir and Milieu), but orientation is easy (except in foggy conditions, of course).

Please note that the mountain pasture is actively used in summer: you will encounter herds of cows everywhere (... and therefore fences), which may sometimes require you to go around them (off-trail) and close the gates properly when a trail crosses a fence.

Note: it would be more logical to start and finish at the altitude of 1269m on the road, but there is little parking available there, especially for groups: this is why we prefer to start at the altitude of 1343m.

The entire route or part of it is within the Haute Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve. Please respect the regulations: https://www.rnn-hautechainedujura.fr/reg...
Part of this route is in a wildlife quiet zone from 15 December to 30 June. More information here: https://www.rnn-hautechainedujura.fr/car... + Access road closed to traffic from 16 December to 31 May.

Worth a visit

The various peaks that make up the Grand Crêt d'Eau offer extensive but similar views of the Alps: the Crêt de la Goutte has an orientation table. The Crêt du Miroir, due to its position away from the others, offers a close-up view of the Pays de Gex and the Genevois that the others do not offer.

Just before arriving at the Chalet de Varambon, fossil-bearing rock outcrops can be seen in the mountain pasture.

The wooded areas at the start and end of the walk are rich in wild strawberries, which can add to the enjoyment of a family outing.

A magnificent hike that climbs through mountain pastures to reach three successive ridges offering splendid views. In good weather, the Mont Blanc range was very clear and it is possible to see as far as the Jungfrau in Switzerland! Magnificent, with little elevation gain, numerous herds of cows and a few chamois!

However, at the end of the route, having tried both options, I prefer to continue straight through the forest and arrive directly at the car park. Turning right at the bottom of the valley doesn't add much (as the forest is the same) and means you have to walk back up the road to the car park, which, in my opinion, is not the most pleasant way to end the hike.

In any case, it's a very beautiful trail. Thank you!

And as already mentioned in previous comments, access to the car park at the start of the route is strictly prohibited from 15 December (or earlier in case of snow) until 30 June, with fines of €135.

Superb circular, easy with short detours off the beaten track, requiring just a little observation/orientation.
Magnificent 360° views.
Bring a windbreaker...

PLEASE NOTE: Access to the car park is prohibited from 15 December to 30 June (snow or no snow) and fines are €135.

The Varambon trail is also off-limits. We met the reserve wardens, just like the last time I went up there, and they are strict! Friendly, but strict.

It is really important to find out about the regulations. The signage for the prohibitions may not be perfect, and even the reserve's website is not specific about the prohibitions for motor vehicles.

We didn't see any chamois, but the view of Lake Geneva and the Alps with Mont Blanc was magnificent. Snow had dusted the peaks, making the landscape very beautiful. Only the icy wind bothered us a little. A hike to recommend.

Please note that access to the car park is via the Sorgia forest road, which is not open to unauthorised traffic on this section. We recommend that you start from the Charnaz car park.

A very pleasant walk with superb views of the Pays de Gex, Geneva and Haute Savoie.

Very enjoyable hike, beautiful panoramic views and landscapes.
Most of the elevation gain is in the first few kilometres, but the route is very accessible. Enjoyable for those who want to enjoy the mountains without too much effort
On the mountain pastures, it is a little less obvious to follow the right route, but this does not spoil the walk.
The 360° view from the Crêt de la Goutte is well worth the detour!

A short hike, done this morning.

We did it in the other direction. It wasn't a choice, we made a mistake
Nice hike, with superb views, not very difficult and, on this Wednesday, not very crowded.
Note that the hike is almost entirely in the sun, so you need to be prepared.

Thank you!

A superb hike, partly in the snow, with beautiful panoramic views... We even saw a chamois!
Please note that from 15 December to 31 May, cars must be parked well below the trail (N46° 09.379' E5° 50.833'). The refuge warden we met at the end of our hike kindly pointed this out to us (we had missed the sign...)..

A 360° panorama with views of the Pays de Gex, the Alps and the Ain Gorges.
There's a lot of snow to get through at this time of year, but when you're young at heart, you find ways to go sledging down the slopes... In short, it's a real breath of fresh air in the company of the chamois...

A very beautiful hike with magnificent 360° views. Especially since the frost that day had covered the trees and grass with a thick layer of hoarfrost: magnificent.
We modified the end of the route slightly, returning via the ski slopes.
Thank you for this guide.

To enjoy an exceptional view, it is best to do this hike in the opposite direction.
