Pic entre les Ports via Lac des Espécières.

In Gavarnie, take the road to Port de Boucharo and park at the Col de Tentes car park.

(S/E) At the end of the road and the Col de Tentes car park, take the signposted path (sign) to Lac des Espècières to the north-west. Follow this path to the lake, go round it to the right, then climb up to the Col des Espécières. From the pass, the panorama is completed by a bird’s-eye view of Lac de Lapazosa and the Tendeñera massif.

(1) Turn left, then follow an intermittent path up the steep grassy hill, south-southeast. Reach the summit of the hill, marked by a cairn.

Walk along the broad ridge in the same direction, following the cairns, then descend a few metres towards a saddle that connects with the pre-summit of Pic entre les Ports.

Turn left onto a small traverse path, then head to the foot of the north-east ridge, situated to the left of the secondary summit where a cairn stands. (See video)
Turn right and, via a short climb on a south-west-facing path, reach this small summit topped by an unfinished stone enclosure.

(2) Continue south-west, keeping well in the centre of the ridge, until you reach the Pic entre les Ports, which is also topped by a stone enclosure.

(3) Return in the opposite direction via the same route to your car park. (S/E)

What can I say about this route?

The climb to the Col des Espécières, entirely on trail, features a few rocky sections that are easy to navigate. You might occasionally use your hands very lightly for convenience, but it’s possible to manage without.

The section beyond the pass isn’t entirely on a path. At times you have to navigate by sight or follow cairns.
However, it’s not at all complicated.

The route along the ridge between the secondary summit and the main summit is slightly exposed but not at all dangerous, provided you stay in the middle and don’t venture to the edges. The ridge is between 3 and 5 metres wide.
This section along the ridge is very easy to navigate and allows you to reach the summit easily in about ten minutes.
Hikers prone to vertigo should probably give this a miss.

For these reasons, I have rated the difficulty as lower-middle.

If you are hiking with children, you must of course keep a close eye on them, as with most mountain routes.
The duration indicated by the software may not necessarily match your own. You may need to recalculate this based on your own pace, the elevation gain and the distance.

It is possible to return via a descent to Lac de Lapazosa to create a circular route. In this case, the hike becomes more difficult with greater elevation gain and distance, as you must climb back up to the Col des Espécières. The descent to the lake requires a good sense of the slope’s gradient to make the most of the terrain.
For these reasons, I have suggested here the most accessible round-trip route to suit the widest possible range of hikers.
