The route starts from the village of Archail. The road leading to the village is quite narrow and there may be snow or ice in winter. When you arrive in Archail, park in the main square next to the church.
(S/E) Go up the road to the left of the church, then keep right at the fork shortly afterwards. If the road is not closed, you can park a little further on in a small car park near the Vieraron dam.
(1) At the Vieraron dam, leave the tarmac road and continue along a wide track. Ignore a turn-off on the left further on and continue straight ahead to reach a track.
(2) Cross the track and continue straight ahead to rejoin it further up.
(3) Cross the track again to take the path that climbs opposite and reach a complex crossroads.
(4) Turn left onto the path, which further on begins a series of hairpin bends before reaching the Pas d'Archail, where there is a refuge and an old shepherd's hut.
(5) Continue to the right, pass in front of the refuge and then leave the track to take a path on the right. After a few hairpin bends, the path widens and the slope becomes gentler as it crosses the Pic de Couard biological reserve.
(6) Turn right onto the path; the slope becomes steeper and the trail winds its way up to the summit of Pic de Couard. There are few markings, so if you lose the trail, head for the ridge to the left of the summit.
(7) Return via the same route to the village (S/E).
