A very beautiful hike above Archail. Superb views throughout the walk and at the summit. A very pleasant setting.

Description of the walk

The route starts from the village of Archail. The road leading to the village is quite narrow and there may be snow or ice in winter. When you arrive in Archail, park in the main square next to the church.

(S/E) Go up the road to the left of the church, then keep right at the fork shortly afterwards. If the road is not closed, you can park a little further on in a small car park near the Vieraron dam.

(1) At the Vieraron dam, leave the tarmac road and continue along a wide track. Ignore a turn-off on the left further on and continue straight ahead to reach a track.

(2) Cross the track and continue straight ahead to rejoin it further up.

(3) Cross the track again to take the path that climbs opposite and reach a complex crossroads.

(4) Turn left onto the path, which further on begins a series of hairpin bends before reaching the Pas d'Archail, where there is a refuge and an old shepherd's hut.

(5) Continue to the right, pass in front of the refuge and then leave the track to take a path on the right. After a few hairpin bends, the path widens and the slope becomes gentler as it crosses the Pic de Couard biological reserve.

(6) Turn right onto the path; the slope becomes steeper and the trail winds its way up to the summit of Pic de Couard. There are few markings, so if you lose the trail, head for the ridge to the left of the summit.

(7) Return via the same route to the village (S/E).

Notes

In winter, take care on the road up to Archail, which can be icy as it is often in the shade.

The climb up to Pas d'Archail is not particularly difficult, except for a few patches of hard snow where you need to be careful not to slip.

At Pas d'Archail (5), there is a water source where you can refill your water bottles.

From Pas d'Archail, it may be useful to bring snowshoes to climb Pic de Couard, as the slope faces north and the snow does not melt quickly and can harden. It can also be difficult to find your way up Pic de Couard as there are few markings. In this case, make zigzags, trying to get closer to the ridge to the left of the summit.

A superb route, both wooded and rocky. The only downside is that it is not a circular route. Be careful, as there are many side paths crossing it, so you will need a map and must pay close attention.

A magnificent hike above Archail. The climb is quite demanding on the legs from the outset! But it is not particularly difficult and leads to a summit with breathtaking views. I had already done it in March when there was still quite a lot of snow, which made reaching the summit a little more difficult (without equipment). A beautiful discovery in a rather quiet and wild area.

This hike is amazing!!!
On 5 July, the conditions were ideal: 12°C at 6:30 a.m., 21°C at the summit.
We didn't see a single person.
At this time of year, everything is pure bliss: the vegetation, the view, the calm, the cool breeze...
I got a few bites from large insects, so next time I'll wear long trousers or use insect repellent.

The climb is a pleasure, the trail is perfectly marked and maintained.
You can always put both feet forward, even on the scree slopes, there's really no danger.
None of the passages are scary, and a mature 10-year-old child could easily do this hike, as long as they are physically fit. The passages that I thought looked dizzying in the photos are not at all.

Ninety percent of the route is in the woods, with only the summit area not being wooded, so it's perfect when it's hot, which wasn't the case for us. The advantage of setting off very early is that you avoid the sun being high in the sky, which is very strong in the summit area. In summer, consider setting off at sunrise, especially for people who are sensitive to heat and sun.
In any case, the woods provide excellent protection along almost the entire route, which is a clear advantage in hot weather.

The Pas d'Archail spring means you only need to carry 1.5 litres of water, or 2 litres for the paranoid, as you can refill before the climb to the summit and before the final descent. Imagine if you had to carry water for a 6-hour walk in hot weather! It's a definite comfort.

Climbing at a leisurely pace, including breaks, it took us 1 hour 45 minutes for the Vieraron - Pas d'Archail section and 1 hour 15 minutes for the Pas d'Archail - Couard summit section.
Three hours to climb is very reasonable for a summit of this kind. And then you're climbing the whole time, so there's no "wasting time" on flat ground. It's enjoyable.

The scenery is splendid; you could spend hours contemplating it, especially with the sun turning.
The beautiful mountains are within easy reach: the Barre des Dourbes first, but also the Cheval Blanc, and further away Blayeul, the Cousson, the Bigue and so on.

In short, if you're in the area, don't miss this classic route in Digne. You won't regret it, as it offers so many advantages.

A very beautiful parish-specific hike in August, where I didn't meet anyone; the panoramic view at the summit is breathtaking; the time indicated seems a little long to me.

A very beautiful hike with a fairly steep start. The landscapes and vegetation change as you climb.
Very beautiful... a must-do!

No major information to add to this description, except to note that this route is now used by cyclists, which has caused some minor damage to the path.
A splendid hike that is physically demanding enough to allow you to fully appreciate the panoramic views on offer.

Hello, I was delighted to go on this hike with magnificent aerial views of the surrounding mountains. The trail is well marked in yellow throughout. The directions are precise, and I didn't feel the route. However, some sections are dizzying, so caution is advised. Thank you.

A pleasant walk, especially for the view from the summit of Couar (although on the day I did it, there were quite a few clouds over the surrounding peaks), the Pas d'Archail, the section in the forest below it, and the abundance of flowers at the end of May. It's a shame that the start from Archail is on a tarmac track and that the route is a bit too straight before the hairpin bends in the forest below the Pas d'Archail: it's a bit tiring on the legs, especially on the way down.
On the other hand, having seen that it was suggested for another route, I climbed to the summit of Cucuyon after descending to the Archail Pass. That was a mistake: it adds nothing to the walk (unless you're just looking to maximise the elevation gain). The climb is steep, through nettles and scree, and all for very little reward: it's a pretty summit when seen from a distance, but without any particular charm when you're there. So, in my opinion, it's best avoided...
