Description of the walk

Park on the road that climbs from Pont de Gers to the Bassiès power station. Find a parking space on the side of the road.

(S/E) Walk up the road towards the power station. Shortly after a waterfall on the left, you will come to a marked trail.

(1) Take the path on the left, which winds its way up in tight hairpin bends. You will soon reach another flat path (with a pipe). Here, join theGR®10marked in red and white.

(2) Take it to the left and then immediately to the right to continue climbing rapidly. The switchbacks gradually fade away, so continue along the ledge. There is a spring in this area. Make a note of its location as it may be useful on the way back.
Continue until you reach a large water pipe.

(3) Pass under this pipe and continue climbing up a rock face above a waterfall.
After a left turn above the Bassiès stream, you will reach a footbridge.

(4) Cross this magnificent stone bridge and climb up to the left to the Bassiès ponds in a sparse pine forest.
The walk to Étang Majeur is a little long and tedious, even though the lakes are very beautiful.
Pass the largest lake and then reach the Pla de la Font pond.

(6) Leave theGR® and head towards Port de Bassiès on the right. The path is very well marked. Join the marked path above the refuge.

(7) Follow it and climb up to the right to reach Port de Bassiès.
Behind you, the Cirque de la Pique Rouge de Bassiès gradually reveals itself, offering a magnificent view! Ignore the steep path, which is a mixture of wet earth, stones and grass, and continue on to the pass.

(8) Take the marked trail on the left towards the Col de las Fouzès (and Pic de Cabanatous).

(9) After a few water points, leave the marked trail on the right at the foot of the summit and continue up the grassy slopes through the rocks. You will soon find some tracks to reach the summit of Pic de Cabanatous without too much difficulty.
Enjoy the magnificent, well-deserved panorama of the Bassiès lakes and the Ariège Pyrenees.

(10) Then descend by following the ridge southwards towards the Col de las Fouzès. Shortly before the pass, join a marked trail.

(11) Turn left towards Port de Bassiès to return to the crossroads leading to the peak before returning to Port de Bassiès.

(8) From here, follow the same route as on the way up to return to the car park (S/E), but take care as the descent is long and challenging. Stay focused and enjoy the scenery.

A good description of this hike.
Easy to access for parking.
Note that there is still quite a lot of snow at this time of year. The lakes are frozen. So the markings are a bit hidden under the snow.
We camped in a tent near Lake Bassiès on 1.5 metres of snow!
Tip: snowshoes are essential in these conditions.

Hiked twice. Lots of water on the path both times towards the ponds.
Otherwise, a very beautiful hike with magnificent views of the ponds.

Hike undertaken during the heatwave in August 2025. The hike initially planned at a higher altitude was not accessible due to a trail.
Needless to say, the 35°C heat was difficult to bear for the first few kilometres, but after the 3rd kilometre, the temperature dropped, the ponds were accessible for cooling off, and the climb became easier.
No major difficulties except for the gradient of the first 3 kilometres, especially if you are carrying a heavy load. The 360° view from the Pic de Cabanatous is not to be missed.
The refuge is well organised, with showers, toilets and washbasins available in the morning for a few euros, and a camping area set up on the grass, sheltered from the grazing animals...

Hike done at the end of April, snow from 1,900 m. The trail is very well marked (GR10).
No technical sections, but the elevation gain is not to be underestimated. The estimated time (7 hours) seems ambitious for an intermediate level; it's better to allow plenty of time to organise your day.

Otherwise, superb scenery and a very pleasant hike.

I went hiking in mid-November and didn't see a single person.
Very well marked (GR10) and no technical difficulties.
I continued along the ridge towards Pic des Planes, then Pic de Fouziès at an altitude of 2,300 metres (a little snow from 2,100 metres upwards, but no great difficulty).
A total of 25km and 1700m of elevation gain, at a steady pace (in 6½ hours).

A round trip on a hot day... well, it's fine, with plenty of opportunities to cool off along the way except at the summit, and my faithful four-legged companion thanked me for it
It's a fairly busy route, with a beach-like atmosphere at Lake Alate for a refreshing break. It's not the place to go if you're looking for somewhere to commune with nature, but the mountains belong to no one and we have to share... hoping that we'll all keep the place as clean as the waters of these lakes and ponds. Do it again with a detour via the glacial valley to the left of the Bassies refuge, but watch out for the herds ).

A very beautiful trail, with the first part through the forest before reaching the lakes. You'll come across pretty little waterfalls, a lovely stone bridge and beautiful scenery. The view from Cabanatous is well worth the effort, so don't hesitate to climb up there. For me, it's one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the area.
The route is not difficult and the slope is steady, but beginners should take the elevation gain into account.
The hike is rated as very difficult, which I think is a bit harsh; difficult seems more appropriate to me.

A very beautiful trail running route. There was still a little snow in places, but it was largely passable.
The end of the route was completed in heavy rain and wind, so we couldn't really enjoy the scenery, but in good weather it must be ten times more beautiful.
