A short walk around the Roche-au-Cerf site

A very pretty little walk that takes you along almost no tarmac roads and follows the Lié valley, on the edge of the Loudéac forest. It takes you to some very interesting sites: La Roche-au-Cerf and its thousand-year-old ford, the castle and the Essarts mill.

Description of the walk

Starting point at La Roche-au-Cerf. You can reach it via the left bank of the Lié, via the hamlet of La Ville Josse, or via the right bank. At the Pont du Gué Jouan, take the small road towards La Courbée, then at L’Aunay-du-Bois, continue to the right. The road turns into a farm track leading to La Roche-au-Cerf.
Parking is available on both sides of the river. A footbridge connects the two banks.

(S/E) The walk begins on the right bank. After passing the buildings, cross the stream via a footbridge and follow the path that climbs away from the forest.

(1) At a place called Cassebreil, take the path slightly to the right behind the farm. You will soon enter the forest and continue on to the Château des Essarts.

(2) Continue along the road that passes through the farm. After the farm, you’ll see the façade of the 18th-century château. Then take the first small road on the right towards the Moulin des Essarts. Once at the mill, cross the Lié via the footbridge. Walk about a hundred metres along the path on the left to discover a curious little spring at the foot of the cliff face.

(3) Then retrace your steps and continue along the path that runs alongside the river.

(4) After the hamlet of La Teurse, at the first bend, take the path on the right which leads back to La Roche-au Cerf (S/E).

A lovely little walk, with water along the way. Perfect for the dog! However, it was tricky to find the starting point. The satnav takes you down impossible paths, and once you’ve gone out of your way to find the house described, there’s a no-parking sign… not exactly straightforward!

A lovely walk, with some beautiful heritage sites right from the start. We also found the second little spring, which had plenty of surprises in store. The route is well shaded and runs almost entirely through woodland; there are practically no tarmac sections, so there are hardly any cars. If it’s hot, you’ll always find a spot where you can cool your feet in the water.

A lovely walk to La Roche aux Cerfs via Les Essarts – lots of woodland, really peaceful!
PS: No problem at all walking with dogs; I did it with my two dogs off the lead, except in Les Essarts where there are houses.
