Short circular loop starting from Aujac

A short route, suitable for families, on decent paths with good signposting. A lovely apiary at Les Bouchets and superb views of the Monts de la Lozère. It’s (relatively) cool in the morning.
You can enhance the walk with a meal at the little restaurant opposite the church (closed on Wednesdays).

Description of the walk

Large car park to the south of the village (tennis courts and motorhome area)

(S/E) Head north towards the village centre. Walk past the church and turn right to follow the path alongside the cemetery: yellow and yellow-red GRP® markings.

(1) At the end of the cemetery road, take the path on the left. Reach the Ruisseau des Juges, keeping east and following the markings. The path then heads south, before turning south-east 200 m further on. Reach a small road.

(2) Follow it to the left, leaving the GRP®. It takes a sharp right-hand bend, then two left-hand bends before crossing a path marked in yellow, which you ignore. Continue for another 200 m along the road, and look out for a path, marked in yellow, which climbs up to the right.

(3) Take this path. It turns left and joins the D51. Follow it for a few metres to the right and look out for the yellow-marked path which branches off to the left.

(4) Take this path. A little further up, it turns right and then crosses some rocky slabs (follow the Yellow Rectangles carefully) before joining a wider path, Le Chaylard. Follow it to the left, passing beneath the Château du Cheylard, which you can see on the right. You’ll come out onto a small road.

(5) Follow it to the right and reach a hairpin bend. Leave the road and take the path opposite. If you turn right, you can make a round trip to the castle (approx. +500 m). Just before reaching the hamlet of Le Brouzet, you’ll find a lovely, refreshing fountain on the right. The path runs alongside the hamlet and, after a left-hand bend, becomes a small road. Continue along this road until you reach the D320.

(6) Follow it to the right. Ignore a yellow signpost leading off to the left (though this can serve as a shortcut), and you’ll reach a hairpin bend. Leave the D320 here and head straight on towards Les Bouchets.
At the entrance to the hamlet, on the left, numerous old beehives have been gathered together to form a magnificent apiary.
Shortly afterwards, look out for the path leading down to the left.

(7) Take this path marked with yellow PR® and yellow-red GRP® signs. A lovely path, descending through the woods, which reaches the D155a.

(8) Follow it to the left and join the D51. Follow this road, also to the left, for about a hundred metres, until you reach the right-hand bend.

(9) Leave the road and take the path opposite (GRP®). You will come within sight of the Habitarelle.

(10) Take the hairpin bend to the right onto the lovely path, and arrive near the D51.

(11) Just before the D51, leave the GRP® and take the path on the left. Cross the D51 carefully and take the road opposite leading to the village. At the T-junction, turn right. Pass between the church (with its comb-shaped bell tower) and the small restaurant, and continue straight on to return to the start (S/E).
