Chemin des Vignes in Génolhac

A circular loop without difficulty, with panoramic views to enjoy with the family. The Chemin des Vignes follows an old route that was once used for terraced farming and then for exploiting the pine forest to support the mining galleries. The vines disappeared in the 1960s.

Notes

In autumn, dogs' paws don't like chestnut husks. Plan to carry your pet.

Sometimes the sign "Battue en cours" (Hunting in progress) means you need to be careful. Change your plans.

Worth a visit

(S/E) Place du Colombier is a pleasant spot with plane trees and a lively atmosphere.

On Saturdays, there is an interesting local market.

The bridge crosses the famous Cévenol railway line. A small canal runs parallel to the bridge, carrying water collected higher up.

(2) On the Chemin des Vignes, the terraces (faïsses) tell the story of this hard-working and ingenious people. The small stone buildings, known as clèdes, were used to dry the chestnuts produced by the breadfruit tree, which helped to prevent famine in difficult times. The vineyards disappeared in the 1960s.

The Trenze massif catches the eye. The lookout watches over the forests

(7) Beautiful view of Génolhac, the extensively remodelled 13th-century church and the chimney of the old tannin factory.

(8) The bridge crosses the Gardonnette. Below on the right, a water catchment feeds a millstream that runs for several kilometres to provide energy to the old mills and irrigate the fields. The main street features Régordian houses with numerous porches providing access to storage areas and shelters for animals.
