From Chams en Hameaux via the Col de Peras

Les Chams de Bonneveau, Cassenade and Malbosquet, and the hamlets of Malbosquet and Les Escoussous as seen from the Col de Peras. Beautiful views of the Cévennes, the Alps, Mont Ventoux, the Tanargue Massif and, closer by, the Berrias Plain. Varied terrain on this fairly demanding hike.

Description of the walk

From Bessèges or Aujac, take the D51 then the D320 towards Bonneveaux to the Col de Peras. Plenty of parking at the pass.

(S/E) Set off towards La Garde de Dieu via the path on the left; this is theGRP® Tour de la Vallée de la Haute Cèze, marked in red and yellow. From the start, the climb is steady and the view of the Cévennes is very pleasant. The path winds its way along the Cham de Bonneveaux and then the Cham de Besses, where it crosses beautiful grassy areas. Stay on this path until you reach the Garde de Dieu crossroads, marked by a cross.

(1) Leave theGRP® here and turn right onto the path. At thefirst junction, take the path leading off to the right. Cross a small stream (at least in winter) and arrive at the Menhir de Cassenades. Take the opportunity to admire them.

(2) Take the path on the right, marked with yellow signs. First through the forest and then along its edge, the path winds its way over the Cros de Coulis to reach the summit of La Fage.

(3) Continue along the path to the summit of Font de l'Aille, then on to a junction of four paths.

(4) Take the path on the right, marked in yellow, heading due south, and stay on it at thefirst junction. It soon begins to descend and becomes increasingly faint. Very few yellow markings, narrow path, sometimes on a slope: stay alert so as not to lose the path. Reach the Cham de Malbosquet.

(5) Follow this path to reach a crossroads near a spring.

(6) Turn left, then at the next junction, turn left again. Enter the hamlet of Malbosquet and reach a section of road. Take it to the right. Then head left between the houses and reach asecond road. Cross it and, opposite, turn right onto a path, following the yellow markings. Continue until you reach the Ruisseau d’Abeau.

(7) Cross it via the beautiful Pont de Sabucles, then turn right towards Les Escoussous.Initially, the path climbs alongside the stream, then moves away from it and reaches a road. Take this road to the right for a few metres and rejoin a path on the left. Climb steeply to cross the hamlet of Grignole. Continue then on a gentler climb to rejoin the road and, at the hamlet of Les Escoussous, theGRP® le Cévenol.

(8) Take it to the left; it runs alongside a small road. Stay on it, following the red and yellow markings. Pass the hamlet of Chabannes on your left and, further on, reach a crossroads of paths by a pond. Here, join theGRP® Haute Vallée de la Cèze.

(9) Go round the pond on the left. Go through a gate and make sure you close it properly. Continue to follow the red and yellowGRP® markings. Carry on uphill to reach the weather station at the highest point

(10) Start the descent here, first along a rocky and somewhat steep path, then through the undergrowth to the Col de Peras car park (S/E).

A superb hike with some lovely views all along the way. The arrival at Cham de Bonnevaux is a feast for the eyes; the climb is a bit tough but it’s well worth the effort. Magnificent views of the Cévennes and the Ardèche, Mont Ventoux and the Alps. Indeed, between points 3 and 4, after the small wooden sign indicating ‘Malbosquet’, make sure to follow the yellow markings from the start of the trail!
We had a lovely day; thank you for this beautiful route!

A beautiful, wild hike with stunning scenery, but tricky without a map, and some of the directions are a bit vague at times.
After La Garde de Dieu, we continued along the GRP and missed the path at the first junction.
We came to a muddy track, where we could indeed continue to the right. But as we had neither a map nor internet on our mobiles, we weren’t sure we’d be able to find the Menhirs. So we retraced our steps along the GRP in the opposite direction to find the little path mentioned in the guide, and take a break at the Menhirs.
We focused on the route description to avoid adding extra kilometres for nothing!
We had no trouble continuing the hike to Malbosquet, descending along a narrow and sometimes poorly marked path, but we didn’t see a spring.
We passed between two houses and then reached a second road, which we crossed; continuing along the path, we walked a good two kilometres before realising that the yellow markings had disappeared. So we retraced our steps and finally found the markings and the path leading downhill again. But we ended up on a road, and the markings stopped there. We couldn’t find the path leading to the Ruisseau d’Abeau. It was really frustrating and disappointing!
We reached a bridge at the junction of the D216 and D320 roads, with just a single sign there pointing to Bonnevaux, 7 km. Heavy rain began to fall, so we made the sensible decision to return to Bonnevaux by road. After a good 4 kilometres on the road, we were able to take a path leading up to this little village, which is well worth a visit. Don’t miss the Church of Saint-Théodorit. A quick return to the Col du Péras car park from the village.
It’s impossible to say where we lost the path that would have allowed us to finish the hike as described in the guide.
We must have walked at least 23 kilometres and it took us 8 hours and 20 minutes to complete this long journey.
We only came across one couple of hikers during the day, and they were just walking around Bonnevaux.

A very pleasant walk at this time of year. It’s a shame the broom and heather aren’t in bloom yet, but the mild weather at this time of year is a real bonus.

A very varied, thoroughly enjoyable and by no means tedious walk.
