Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the Vyans-le-Val cemetery.

(S/E) Facing the cemetery, start the walk by turning left onto Rue des Cerisiers towards Héricourt.

(1) Turn left at the recycling bins (you can walk past the barrier) and continue along the path leading into the woods. Ignore a path on the right heading towards the high-speed rail line, and keep left to reach a crossroads where four paths meet.

(2) Turn left and cross the fields (taking the path in the middle) until you reach the end of Rue des Vignes. Then turn right, then immediately left, and follow the tree-lined path.

(3) At the junction, veer to the right, then at the next junction, turn left. Follow the wooded path, go straight on at the crossroads to rejoin the tarmac road just past the football pitch. Continue along Rue des Pins, then turn left onto Rue des Dandeligeons, which you should follow all the way to the Town Hall.

(4) Turn right onto Rue du Lavoir (where you’ll find a magnificent wash house in which you can spot crayfish), then right again onto Rue du Noyeu. You then need to take the first street on the left, Rue du Vieux Chemin, to reach the finish point at the cemetery car park (S/E).

We came as a family to explore this circular walk with our grandchildren, and everyone enjoyed the variety of the route, which wasn’t too difficult given the perfect weather. A lovely experience

We live on the other side of Héricourt and came to Vyans for a change of scenery. We really enjoyed the walk – it’s flat 95 per cent of the time, winding through woodland and countryside, and the signposts are clear and reliable. It was a total of 4 kilometres in 50 minutes; we’ll be back – perhaps by bike next time.

A village, fields of grain and (the edges of) woodland over a leisurely 4 kilometres (one uphill stretch, one downhill stretch): very good.

Please note:
- The Rue des Cerisiers at the start is literally the road towards Héricourt (with little traffic), which you quickly leave by taking the path on the left at the recycling bins.
- Logging operations have slightly altered the topography of the approach to the ‘crossroads’ mentioned in the description.
- A few benches on mown grass dot the paths through the fields.
- The mid-May blossom is both beautiful and a nuisance for those with pollen allergies.
- Visitor numbers are average despite Covid; it must be said that these are easy paths on the Héricourt ‘network’.
- A lovely wash house, but have there ever actually been crayfish there, as mentioned in the information sheet?
