La Garenne Route No. 1: a short family walk around the Berry Canal

Start from L’Escale de Thénioux.

(S) Take the path between the landing stage and the Rio. After the barrier, turn right and cross the small stone bridge.

(1) You are now on the Chemin de Fernet, between the River Cher and the Canal du Berry. After 750 metres, you’ll come to the village hall on your right and the Lodge du Petit Nançais (a 15th-century building)

(2). Cross the Route de Genouilly and take the Chemin de la Garenne opposite. Follow this stony path for 1 km between fields and a small pond. Walk alongside the river on your left for a few metres, then turn right to climb the embankment of the canal’s spillway:

In summer, trainers are sufficient. In winter, if the weather is damp, walking boots are recommended. There is a water point at the canal rest stop, managed by the Vierzon Tourist Office from June to the end of August.
