Description of the walk

Starting at the Old Shire Inn car park, please ask before setting off, and enjoy some refreshments afterwards.

(S/E) Head out of the car park, handrail the main road B3303, north for 300m to the Estate lodge gate, turn right through the gateway and up the drive, which will turn to a track, through the woods.
There will be several woodland trails; stick with the app.

(1) Turn left (north). The trail will start to climb and join an old estate track, which will meet up with a country lane. Step over the wall onto the road, turn left, head north, then turn right. The trail leads northeast. Continue up through the woods, the path will lead up to houses. Continue northeast past dwellings to the hamlet of Knave-go-by (A).

(2) Turn right and follow the lane up to Tolcarne Road.

(3) Turn right and continue along the lane, which will turn into a track, heading south. The route will lead through trees and fields, with stiles and gates.

(4) At the lane, turn left, southeast towards Stennack. Turn right, following the lane to the gate leading to Giant's Quoit burial chamber (B), see the memorial bench in the southern corner of the field.

(5) Exit the field again, turn left following the lane back the way you came for about 200m. Turn left into the woods, leading to the church and war memorial.

(6) By the church is a path leading into the woods and a track. Follow the track down through the woods, which in turn retraces the route back to (1) and then onto the start point. (S/E)

Worth a visit

Along the route

  • Pendarvas Estate, now an Equestrian Centre. The woodland trails hides many of its mining past with ruins, and prospecting mounds. There is also a large adit, and some capped mine shafts. It is best to keep the woodland trail.
  • (A) Knave-Go-By - an unusual place name. The name, though open to speculation, is said to have been named after the founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley, while walking through the village, a villager was claimed to have said, ' Let the knave go by'. However, the hamlet was recorded as 'Never Go By' before Wesley >>>
  • (B) Giant's Quiot -The Carwynnen Quoit, a large Dolmen (a megolithic tomb, with a large flat stone laid on top of upright ones >>>
  • Treslothan -Church, and War Memorial
