Connor Down, the Hydraulic Ram, and Angarrack

This is a pleasant walk along country tracks and lanes, with the route passing over the main railway line, visiting the Hydraulic Ram, following some old tracks, and crossing under the viaduct at Angarrack. The route back is up the old main road, along 'Slug' Lane, returning to Connor Down

Description of the walk

(S/E) Starting at the bus stop opposite the 'Turnpike Inn', head West, turning left into Blacksmiths Lane (South), through a farm gate, and continue to another gate opening onto Angarrack Lane. Continue straight across, through another gate, where the path becomes more of an old farm track. Look out for: after 300m approx, it gets a little 'woody', trees and bushes. This was the old mining Railway line. Continue on the track to the current London to Penzance railway bridge.

(1) From the bridge, continue down the hill. Near the bottom of the hill, the track will turn right, but continue on to the stream at the bottom.

(2) At the stream slightly to the left, there is a fence, standing by the wire fence, and looking upstream. There is a small brick hut by the water's edge. Listen and hear the click of the Hydraulic Ram (B). Returning up the track, and left along, following the designated route, passing an abandoned hamlet of 'Coldharbour' to a double stile and gate.
Note: At the time of this walk, there were notices - Beware of the Bull - there was a fence.

(3) Continue through another gate, back to the track, leading to a farm, and the village of Angarrack (C). The track leads onto a road, turn right, staying on the access road to the viaduct.

(4) Staying on this to (5), or Option: take the path left, and down into the village, turn right at the bottom, continue to the road junction, turning right again up the hill to (5). (Refreshments at the local inn are optional).

(5) Turn right, walking up 'Steamers Hill', this was the original road track from Redruth to Penzance. Approaching near the top. Look out for: an old milestone -Penzance 10, Lands End 20, after the speed signs and at the large trees, into a dwelling. This is where the old railway line crossed to the incline (D).

(6) Continue along the lane to the next gated track on the left, which was known locally as 'Slug Lane', probably something to do with the adjacent farmer's field and what was grown there. Turn left and follow 'Slug Lane'.

(7) Turn right and up Connor Hill and Turnpike Road, to the start (E).
