Relleu footbridge

The footbridge is a wooden walkway attached to the wall of the canyon formed by the Amadoria River and known as Estret del Pantà (the strait of the dam). Below, there is a drop of between 20 m and 60 m, depending on the location. There are also two glass overhangs for the more daring. The walkway, which is a round trip, was installed in 2022. It is a vertiginous walkway above the ravine and is not recommended for those who suffer from vertigo.

Description of the walk

The start of the footbridge can only be reached on foot. There are two options: either an easy 10 km hike starting from the village of Relleu, bearing in mind that the entrance to the footbridge is halfway along this route, or a short route starting from a car park, approximately 1.5 kilometres long (one way), to reach the start of the footbridge. The following is a description of the 10 km hike, but the location of the car park for the short hike is also mentioned.

(S/E) From the car park at the start of the walk, located at the foot of Relleu Town Hall, walk up the road to the Ayuntamiento and take the small street on the left. The route is marked with white and green signs, or just large white dots, which you simply follow. Leave the village, turn left at the three-way junction to reach the CV-775, then join it.

(1) Cross the road and take a path on the right towards the Barranco del Riu Amadòrio. You will reach a three-way junction.

(2) Take the dirt track on the right and head towards the bottom of the ravine.

(3) Continue along the bottom of the ravine, then turn off to the right. Join a track and follow it in the same direction.

(4) Leave the track and turn right.

(5) Take the time to look at the lime kiln and read the information panel, which is in Spanish only. Continue to a three-way junction.

(6) Go to the right and arrive at the small hut, which is the entrance to the footbridge. The person at the ticket office will provide a helmet, which is mandatory for the walk.

(7) Complete the walkway by going to the end of the developed section.

(8) Return to the hut to return the helmet.

(7) Retrace your steps.

(6) To return, change direction and turn right. Ignore several paths on the right, keeping towards "Ayuntamiento", and return to the car park. For those wishing to take the short route to the start of the footbridge, this route is a round trip.

(9) Continue along the tarmac road, which can make the return journey a little monotonous. Pass a few houses on the right and left to reach a crossroads.

(10) Turn right. The road loses its surface and becomes a dirt track, then further on it becomes tarmac again.

(11) When you reach the entrance to a house on the right, take the dirt track on the left, which leads to a tarmac road.

(12) Continue to the right, towards the village of Relleu.

(13) Turn left, then return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

(7) Footbridge: there is an entrance fee (€3.50 in 2025), but it is highly recommended to book in advance (date and time of departure from the hut) on the website www.pasareladerelleu.es.

For information, the rating established by the French Hiking Federation (FFR) is as follows: IBP = 33, length = 8.5 km and elevation gain = 230 m. These figures may differ from those given by Visorando; in this case, always use the higher figures to get an idea of the difficulty of the hike.

To get to the starting point of the hike by car:

From Alicante city, take the A31 motorway (from Calle Mexico) towards Madrid and quickly take exit 236A towards Benidorm and Valencia. Continue on the A70 motorway towards Benidorm and Valencia. Take exit 66 for N-332 / CV-770 / La Villa Joiosa. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit towards CV-770 / Orxeta / Sella and CV-775 / Relleu (signposted 15 kilometres). Pass Orxeta.

Further on, turn right towards CV-775 / Relleu, signposted 6 kilometres. Be careful not to go straight on towards Sella (signposted 4 kilometres). Enter Relleu and head towards the Ayuntamiento (town hall) where there is a car park. Alternatively, continue a little further and there is another car park in Calle Evarist Manero Molla. Finally, if you continue a little further and turn left, there is another car park.

For your information, by car from Alicante, it is about 52 km and takes about 1 hour.

We followed the approximately 10 km circular route from the charming village of Relleu. The route as a whole is neither difficult nor particularly interesting. There are several paved sections and the views are not exceptional. However, the section with the footbridges in the canyon is truly beautiful and impressive. We were there in mid-January during the week, so it was very quiet, which was very pleasant. In high season, we can imagine the crowds on this footbridge, which must detract greatly from the charm of this splendid place.
