El Penyo Mulero in the Serra d'Aitana

The Sierra de Aitana has the highest peaks in the province of Alicante. This route explores an extreme part of the sierra, on the Benimantell side, with a climb to a peak over 1,300 m. This hike is rated difficult due to the long climbs and constant exposure to the sun.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this hike is at the end of the paved road leading to Pas Del Comptador. To get to this starting point by car, see the "Practical information" section.

Before setting off, take a look at the surrounding landscape and in particular the village of Guadalest, which is easily recognisable with its buildings on small peaks.

Remember to take plenty of water with you.

(S/E) From the car park, continue along the road until you reach the unpaved section. Continue along this wide, easy path, which is the PR®-CV9, marked with white and yellow signs. You will arrive at Pas del Comptador, a narrower passage surrounded by rocks.

(1) Descend on the other side towards Sella. Make several hairpin bends and ignore the turnings on the left.

(2) Leave the wide road and take the small path on the right that climbs uphill. Note the huge caves opposite, which the path will go around on the right. The path is very well marked and easy to follow. However, it's a shame to have descended so far, as from this altitude of 700 m, the path climbs to over 1,000 m. You will arrive at Port de l'Arc, a pass at an altitude of 1,045 m.

(3) Take the path that branches off to the left.

(4) At the fork, continue straight ahead (west). Climb steadily and for a long time across open terrain. You will arrive at the summit of Penyó Mulero. There is nothing to distinguish it really, as it is in an almost flat area: it is a flat rock. There is a 360° view of the mountains and the sea.

(5) Descend via the same route you took on the way up.

(4) Take the path on the left. At the cairn that appears immediately, take a path hidden between rocks on the left. Descend and walk alongside various crops, including almond trees. Ignore a path on the right and continue to the place called El Malpasset.

(6) Take the first path on the right, at an acute angle. Stay on this wide, very pleasant path.

(7) At the crossroads, take the second path on the right and leave a shed on your left. A little further on, in a field of trees, the path disappears a little due to the vegetation: follow the right-hand edge of the field and you will find the path again. The path becomes narrower and the descent very steep: proceed calmly and take care.

(8) Ignore a path on the left, continue straight ahead and pass at the foot of the huge cliffs. Continue through an area of scree: the path is very visible but you must be very careful as the stones roll. Descend slightly.

(9) You will come out onto a wide path and follow it to the right. Make a hairpin turn to the left. Then turn right.

(10) Ignore a path on the left and turn right again.

(11) At the T-junction just after a hut, turn left. Stop to see the Font del Pi: it's a tiny fountain, but look at the walls covered with vegetation.

(12) You will come out onto a paved road; follow it to the right. After about 200 m, you will return to the parking area (S/E).

Notes

The starting point can be reached from the CV70 road between La Nucia and Benimantel. Coming from La Nucia, after kilometre 35, you will see a parking sign on the right and a sign for El Trestellador on the left. Turn left. After 200 metres, at a fork in the road, turn left again and follow the signs for Pas del Comptador. The paved road ends less than a kilometre further on. Leave your car there.

For information, it is 70 km from Alicante by car, which takes about an hour.
