Description of the walk

By car, you can park on Boulevard de la Grotte Rolland.
By public transport, the start point is accessible from the Grotte Rolland bus stop.

(S) From the start, follow the Yellow and Green trail towards Grotte Rolland. At the bend in Boulevard de la Grotte Rolland, continue along the path leading uphill opposite and head towards the first junction.

(1) Turn left and follow the Yellow and Black trail towards Grotte Rolland. The cave is situated approximately 350 m from the next junction and is no longer open to visitors (closed by the Calanques National Park for nature conservation reasons).

(2) At this second junction, follow the black trail and continue uphill. You will reach a four-way crossroads, Col de la Selle, within the woodland of the same name.

(3) Follow the Yellow and Green trails towards Pointe Callot. When the Yellow and Green trails split, stay on the Yellow trail as it climbs. At the top of the climb, the plateau below Pointe Callot is a good spot to take a break and admire the view stretching as far as Cap Canaille in Cassis. The rest of the route to Col de la Galinette is more gentle. Continue along the Yellow trail until you cross a dotted Green trail again.

(4) Take the dotted Green trail to climb up to the Pas de la Demi-Lune.

(5) Take particular care when crossing the Pas de la Demi-Lune. The difficulty of this section is not technical but lies in the vertigo-inducing heights, as the path is very narrow. Continue straight on to the next point along the Yellow trail.

(6) You can take a short detour to the Grotte Saint-Michel d’Eau Douce. Access is via a rope attached to the rock. The view from there is magnificent.
After the cave, stay on the Yellow Trail to begin the descent towards Callelongue. Be careful, however, as the descent is via the Pas de l’Escalier des Géants.
Once you reach the pass, there is a path on the left which is a little easier as the handholds and footholds are more accessible.

(7) Continue along the Yellow and Green trails to the port of Callelongue (E).

At Callelongue, take the minibus to the terminus, then bus no. 19 to the Grotte Rolland stop to return to the starting point.

Notes

Alternatives:
(4) Those who do not wish to take this section to climb up to the Pas de la Demi-lune can complete the walk to Callelongue by following the Yellow trail.
(6) For those wishing to avoid the Pas de l’Escalier des Géants, it is possible to take the Green route straight away, which joins the Yellow route further down at the next junction, without passing through the Grotte Saint-Michel.

There are no water points available along the route.
Make sure you have good, non-slip walking shoes as some sections are slippery and can be dangerous.
Do not undertake this walk if the ground is wet or if there is a risk of bad weather.

Worth a visit

Enjoy 360° views of the calanques and Marseille.

A magnificent, absolutely sublime hike
BUT BUT BUT!! WARNING: the passage at the Pas de la Demi-Lune is truly dizzying, even if you don’t suffer from vertigo. As you cross the pass (a sort of gap in the mountain face that allows you to get to the other side), the wind blows very strongly. You have to let yourself slide down the rock face to reach a very, very narrow ledge (you can’t really call it a path), and the view of the drop below can be paralysing. Then there’s about twenty metres to cover along the ledge, clinging to the rock features. It’s truly very, very impressive. There are rings embedded in the rock, but unfortunately there’s no cable, which would be a great help here.
Apart from this major difficulty, there are a few sections of the path where you’re more likely to be climbing than walking, but it’s still good fun.

A lovely walk through varied countryside. Stunning views from the Pas de la Demi-Lune. I didn’t try the alternative route at the end, but the descent down the Escalier des Géants is considerably trickier than the Pas de la Demi-Lune.
