(S/E) From the car park behind the church, head west and you’ll immediately come to a T-junction. Follow the small road on the right until you reach a crossroads (Piquet la Valeyrette).
(1) Take thesecond path on the right towards La Mouradette. You’ll come to a Fork in the road.
(2) Take the left-hand track to reach another Fork in the road.
(3) Keep to the right until you reach another Fork in the road (Les Andos)
(4) Keep to the right (due north) and reach a Fork in the road.
(5) Take the path on the left, pass two hairpin bends and reach another Fork in the road.
(6) Take the track on the right (l’Airolle) to the next Fork in the road.
(7) Turn left onto a lovely path through the woodland. You’ll reach a T-junction.
(8) Head left and you’ll immediately come to a junction with a main track (signpost: Sous le Moure de la Gadille).
(9) Cross the main track to take the path opposite. Further on, turn right to reach the ‘Gardille’ signpost.
(10) Then turn right.
(11) At the fork, continue to the left to reach the summit: a cross and a viewpoint.
(12) Retrace your steps. Ignore a path on the left and you’ll come to a Fork in the road.
(11) Carry on to the left and head downhill to rejoin the path you took on the way up. Turn left and rejoin the main path from the outward journey.
(9) Cross the main path by following the reverse route of the outward journey.
(8) Head straight ahead along the narrow, steeply descending path and reach a Fork in the road (La Mouradette signpost).
(13) Turn left and you’ll very quickly reach the “Sources de l’Allier” signpost.
(14) Turn slightly left towards Las Parros. From here to Chabalier, there are virtually no signposts. You’ll reach a crossroads.
(15) Take a hairpin bend to the left. Very soon, at the next hairpin, head straight on towards the gate (marked in yellow!)
(16) Go through the gate and head down to the spring. You should then take a hairpin bend to the right, keeping as close as possible to the hillside on your left (ignore the large cairn). The start of the path is a bit overgrown, but it soon improves considerably. You’ll reach a T-junction.
(17) Turn left; after about a hundred metres, you’ll find a hairpin bend on the right.
(18) Follow this path. Just after a right-angle bend to the right, you’ll come to a T-junction.
(19) Turn right and head downhill to a Fork in the road.
(20) Take the left-hand fork and you’ll come straight away to another Fork in the road. Take the right-hand fork and, 100 m further on, you’ll reach another Fork in the road.
(21) Carry on along the left-hand track and follow it for about 500 m until you reach another Fork in the road.
(22) Turn right. After two hairpin bends, you’ll reach a T-junction.
(23) Turn right onto the right bank of the Veyssette and you’ll come to a Fork in the road.
(24) Carry on to the left to cross the stream and continue along the path. A long stretch, almost following the contour lines, leads to a Fork in the road.
(25) Turn right to head down the Upper Allier Valley along a good, slightly stony path. The valley is beautiful, but the Allier River is playing hard to get and doesn’t show itself much. Near the hamlet of Chabalier, you’ll reach a small road.
(26) Head right towards the hamlet. Pop in to say hello to Stevenson and Modestine, then reach a junction (signposted ‘Chabalier’).
(27) Turn sharply right onto the tarmac road and cross the Allier. Just after the bridge, you’ll find a path on the right (marked with GR® and yellow signs: it’s a piece of cake!).
(28) Follow this path, cross a ford (Ruisseau de Fontaleyres) and reach a T-junction and a road.
(29) Follow the road to the right (the GR® heads left to reach Chasseradès via the D6. Surprising, isn’t it?). Walk past the farm and the Prat Claux campsite and head towards the church at Chasseradès. (S/E)
