Departure from the AltiCiné cinema car park, Rue du Port.
(S/E) With your back to the canal, walk past the AlTiCiné cinema, cross Boulevard Anatole France and then the car park at Place du 18 Juin 1940, also known as Place du Patis. Opposite, head towards the central entrance to Parc du Patis near the monument, cross the garden and exit towards the bandstand.
Continue left on the forecourt towards the village hall, join Boulevard Paul Baudin on the right, cross the Loing and walk past the media library.
(1) At the crossroads, turn right towards the Mirabeau statue and follow Avenue Adolphe Cochery. At the bridge under the D2007 (diversion from the former RN7), turn right onto the path that winds along a branch of the Loing. When you reach Rue du Faubourg de la Chaussée, turn right onto this street and cross two secondary branches of the Loing, then the main branch.
(2) After the Quai du Loing, opposite the Montargis urban community office building, cross the street and enter the Girodet Museum park on the left. Walk along the left side of the Lorris arcades to reach the Jardin Durzy at the back. Exit on the right side onto Boulevard Durzy.
Cross over to the Briare Canal towpath and the Reinette lock. Walk along the canal to the Victor Hugo metal footbridge, known as the Eiffel Bridge.
(3) Turn left onto Allée Anne d'Este along the building and continue to the end of the lake, on the D2007 side. Then turn right and right again before the swimming pool to go around the back. Join the road at the D2007 bridge and continue on the right bank of the lake.
Go around the lake to the sailing school. Cross the weir footbridge and then two more on the left to reach the rowing club. Continue right on Chemin de la Baignade to Pont Saint Roch, then opposite along the towpath along the canal to the Marolle lock.
(4) Cross the lock via the footbridge opposite the lock keeper's house. Then turn left and then right to pass between the buildings constructed on the site of the former hospital. Join Allée du Docteur Gastellier opposite, then exit the enclosure via the porch and arrive at Rue Jean Jaurès (formerly RN7).
Head right towards the town centre until you reach Place Victor Hugo. Turn right onto Boulevard des Belles Manières on the plane tree side and continue to Ruelle Pinon opposite no. 7. Cross the footbridge over the canal's discharge arm on the left and you will arrive at Place de la République. Stay to the right of the square and continue opposite via Rue Laforge, then turn left onto Rue de l'Ancien Palais and right onto Rue de la Pêcherie.
(5) Turn left into the passage between the houses opposite No. 15 and you will come out onto Rue du Four Dieu. Turn right, then left onto Rue Raymond Tellier (Chinese Museum). At Rue du Loing, go opposite Rue de la Tour du Sault and join Rue Neuve du Patis at its end. You will come out on the right at the Briare Canal. Follow it on the left until you reach Pont Saint-Nicolas.
(6) Take the stairs and head towards the traffic lights on the right. Cross the road towards the esplanade and take the Saint-Nicolas footbridge to reach Rue du Patis on the left. Continue until you reach Rue Triqueti.
(7) Go around the Sainte-Madeleine Church, turning left and then right onto Place Mirabeau. Continue right onto Rue du Général Leclerc and then left onto Rue Gambetta.
(8) Walk 50 metres to the Town Hall, cross the garden and paved area on the right to reach the rear of Place Girodet. Take Rue Basse du Château on the left of the square, then the staircase that continues on from it. Walk up Rue du Château on the left for about 20 metres, then cross over to Chemin de la Collerette opposite.
Pass by the Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice Chapel and walk along the cemetery. After the water tower, turn right twice onto Rue de La Collerette, then Villa Renée de France. Take the dirt track going up behind Château de Montargis. Go through the gate on the left and cross the garden. At the exit, go down to the left, then right into the embankment above and again right at the Perruchot crossroads roundabout.
(9) You will come out on Rue du Château. Cross the Puiseaux near the Musée du Gatinais and continue straight ahead on Rue du Général Leclerc. After the Palais de Justice, turn left onto Rue Cour Jean Dupont and cross the canal via the footbridge. At the end of the bridge, opposite the Tourist Office, turn around and take the path on the right along the canal. Pass under the Pont du Québec bridge, then near the police station, and reach the car park behind it (S/E).
