Montagne de Saint-Maurice via the track and the valley

Montagne de Saint-Maurice is famous for its chapel and ridges. This route takes you there via a track suitable for vehicles and offers a lovely view with a magnificent 360° panorama, with the Trois Becs, Grand Delmas and Montagne de Couspeau to the north, Montagne de la Lance to the south and, on a clear day, Mont Ventoux. The return journey follows a path through a beech forest, at the bottom of a wild valley.

Description of the route

Start from the entrance to the “Hutopia” campsite, Chalaval district, Dieulefit. Coming from Nyons or Montélimar, head towards Bourdeaux on the D538 and turn left towards Les Vitrouillères, just after the fire station and opposite the gendarmerie. Park before the campsite entrance, along the road.

(S/E) Continue along the road, go round the barrier and carry on along the track overlooking the campsite until you reach a fork.

(1) Turn right and follow the track, which climbs gradually for 6 km, until you reach a field of lavender.

(2) The slope levels off and then becomes almost flat. Continue until you reach a fork in a bend to the left of the track, with a path climbing to the right and a forest track descending to the left.

(3) Continue along the track until you come to a small path on the right, after a short climb.

(4) Turn right and you’ll soon reach the chapel.

(5) After enjoying the view, return to the track.

(4) Continue to the right until you reach the telecommunications pylons.

(6) Don’t hesitate to climb to the top of the ridge, behind the pylons, to enjoy a magnificent view. Then head back to the fork marked on the path after the chapel entrance.

(3) Head downhill along the forest track to the right and you will soon reach a fork.

(7) Take a sharp right-hand bend and follow the path at the bottom of the valley. When the slope levels out, continue along the path and rejoin the route you have already taken.

(1) Turn right and head for the campsite entrance (S/E).
