The hike starts from the Sapins car park. Access is from the hamlet of Saint-Sauveur, east of Hauteluce: turn right and climb up a small road, then a forest track. The last three kilometres are unpaved.
(S/E) Take the wide path heading south-west. After about 15 minutes, join a trail that climbs up to Pas d'Outray.
(1) Continue south through the blueberries and rhododendrons. Ignore another path coming from the right (from the Plan du Mont car park). The slope becomes steeper and the path turns east.
(2) At Pas d'Outray, there is a splendid view of Beaufort and the Roselend dam. Continue east, follow a few switchbacks and continue south-east.
(3) Sheltered by the Trois Moineaux, continue north-east.
(4) At an altitude of 2,100 metres, the trail turns east-northeast to descend to the Chalets d'Outray. Leave the trail on the left and stay on the plateau. Go off-trail, heading north-northeast on a gentle slope. Turn northeast to reach Lac du Bout de Crêt.
(5) Go around the lake on the left and descend eastwards in switchbacks to the Col du Sallestet.
(6) From the pass, head east then north-east on the trail that climbs to Lac Noir.
(7) Continue north and make a large detour until you overlook the Girotte dam.
(8) The trail then descends along a ledge (southwest) and then in switchbacks. Cross the Ruisseau du Sallestet and climb back up in short switchbacks. At the T-junction, turn left (south).
(9) At Plan de la Mouille, turn right and continue north-west downhill. At a crossroads, turn left (south-west) and descend in hairpin bends through the forest. When you leave the forest, you will come to a track.
(10) Follow the track on the left (west) until you reach the car park where you started (S/E).
