Description of the walk

Park in one of the two car parks at the Saint-Jean-du-Marché cemetery, which are accessible to motorhomes.

(S/E) As you leave the car park, head left towards the D30.

(1) Turn left towards Faucompierre.

(2) At the junction, turn right towards Faucompierre until you reach a path on the right.

(3) Leave the tarmac road and take a small dirt track on your right. After a few dozen metres, turn right again until you reach a wider, better-maintained track, which you should follow to the right. If the vegetation allows, you will be able to see, in turn, the villages of Saint-Jean-du Marché, La Neuveville-devant-Lépanges, Lépanges-sur-Vologne, Decymont and Le Boulay on your right. You will come to a crossroads.

(4) Turn left, then keep left at the fork a few metres further on.

(5) Continue to your left, admiring the villages of Xamontarupt and Faucompierre below.

(6) Keep left at the next junction. Just before a hairpin bend where there is a crossroads, take a path on the left which serves as a shortcut and then continue left for about twenty metres.

(7) Follow the sign on your left pointing to the castle and begin the climb up the path leading there. This section is quite difficult.

(8) At the top of the hill, at an altitude of 597 m, you can explore the castle ruins, which include a keep, towers, ramparts, a fortified gate and a chapel. Please take care when exploring the ruins, as the site is not secured.
Then retrace your steps back to the signpost.

(7) Continue your walk by heading straight ahead. Take care as the path is not maintained and is quite uneven. Continue downhill to the road.

(3) Turn left. All you have to do now is retrace your steps to return to your starting point (S/E).

Sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The route is through the forest, shaded and very peaceful. A small box is hidden in the castle; please feel free to leave a note.

Worth a visit

(8) The castle was built in the 13th century by the lords of Parroy, and was later acquired by the lords of Toullon.
Destroyed by Franco-Swedish troops during the Thirty Years’ War in the mid-17th century, it now stands as a beautiful ruin.

A lovely walk. The area around the castle ruins is a bit harder to reach, but it’s really worth it.

A very pleasant walk, but be warned: the area around the castle is far from easy. We got a bit confused by the signposts on the way back, which meant the route ended up being much longer than expected.

We didn’t do the whole walk; we just did the return trip to the castle ruins (3, 7, 8).

There is a shaded area alongside the D11d, not far from point (3), where three cars can easily park safely away from the road; it’s much nicer to park there than in the blazing sun in the cemetery car park on a scorching hot day ;-) ...

From (3) to (7), the climb is very steep; it is ‘easier’ to go up by taking the path on the right from (3) to (4), then turning left towards (7) and following the path along the hillside.

At the top, the ruins are a lovely, shady spot with areas where the cool breeze provides relief from the heat; walk around them at the bottom to get a proper sense, thanks to the remains of the walls still standing (south-east), of the grandeur of the building in its day... With the warmth of the sun’s rays, the scent of the mulberry and wild strawberry bushes is intoxicating...

Do also remember to leave a little note and/or an object in the box hidden in one of the crevices of an easily accessible wall of the castle ruins (upper part of the ruins); we had nothing to leave, so we slipped a few leaves and flowers from the season between the pages of the notebook...

Enjoy your hike, everyone

A circular loop through the woods, with no difficulties, for a leisurely stroll.

We did the route in reverse so we could see the ruins first. Well, as for the ruins, don’t expect anything spectacular, and the climb is quite steep.
With the GPX, it was absolutely perfect and we managed to complete the circular route in 3 hours (beginner walkers with breaks). The vegetation blocked the view quite a bit. So perhaps it’s best to wait for a lovely autumn day, as suggested.
We just found the path a bit monotonous, as we couldn’t see much of the valley.

Thank you very much for introducing me to this little-known castle – even though I pass by it very often
Very beautiful ruins, though the walking route is a bit monotonous
