Description of the walk

To start the walk, head to Montpeyroux, Place de l’Horloge (there is a belfry topped with a bell). Turn right onto Avenue des Platanes and follow signs for Église du Barry. Continue right onto Rue du Barry, and park in the car park at the village entrance on the left.

(S/E) From the car park, head north, cross the picturesque village, go round the church on your left; at the end of the street, opposite the Puits du Peyrou, you’ll find a fountain and a drinking trough. Turn right and follow the sign on the weathered wooden signpost: “Le Château Castellas”, marked with red and white signs forthe GR® 653. Walk alongside several crosses, go round the ramparts of the old castle ruins and continue uphill to reach the junction with the PR®.

(1) Turn left, leave theGR® and follow thePR®, marked in yellow. Head left and cross the junction. At the bottom of the short descent, you’ll reach the Cocalières fields. Keep right on the climb and reach the junction with a wider track at a bend.

(2) Take the track on the left, follow the fields, then atthe second bend, leave the markings and turn right. Cross the vineyards, follow a low wall and join the D122 road. Turn right onto it and follow it to the end of the vineyards.

(3) Leave the road to the right, keep to the left of the gate, cross an olive grove then walk past the house and its shed on the right. You’ll come out onto the path.

(4) Turn left onto it; at the next Y-junction, keep right. At the next left-hand bend, leave the track and turn left onto the steep, difficult downhill path. Then rejoin the D122 road and turn right onto it. Walk past the Font du Griffe lodge and continue on to reach the junction withthe GR®74.

(5) Take theGR®74to the left, walk past the top of the lodge and follow the red and white markings again. Begin a series of wide hairpin bends which end at the summit of Mont Saint-Baudille.
Caution! As you approach the summit, head right, go round the relay station and reach the summit. Make your way to the new orientation table.

(6) Head back down the road for a few metres, then turn right off it to stay on theGR®74. Pass La Baume des Corneilles, then reach the Ravin de Coste Vieille and the crossroads of paths.

(7) Leave theGR® 74 to follow thePR®, then follow the yellow markings to the right onto the rocky, descending path. Continue along this path, passing the steps and the hairpin bend. You will reach the D122 road again.

(8) Turn right onto it for a few hundred metres, reaching the start of a track on the left, at the junction withthe GR®74.

(9) Turn left, leave the yellow markings and follow theGR®74, marked in white and red. You will soon reach a three-way junction.

(10) Leave theGR®, rejoin aPR® with yellow markings by following the right-hand branch. Reach a right-angled junction.

(11) Turn right, continue the descent, find theGR®653, the Way of St James, and take it to the right. Stay on this wide path and reach a fork.

(12) Take the slight uphill path to the right at an acute angle, then quickly begin the descent, winding through the woods, and join the path leading to Pioch Canis.

(13) Leave the wide track for the path on the right, cross through Pioch Canis, and rejoin a new track just before the Neolithic enclosure.

(14) Turn right and return to the junction you passed on the way out.

(1) Follow the same route as on the way there to reach the car park at Église du Barry (S/E).

Challenging hike: 26km/1000m elevation gain/8 hours including two 15-minute breaks/overcast weather 14*

Points of interest:

  • Way of the Cross from Montpeyroux.
  • Castellas de Montpeyroux.
  • Mont Saint-Baudile with its view (here I had my head in the clouds).
  • Saint Guilhem national forest.

Points to consider:

  • Long hike (26 km) with a significant elevation gain (1,000 m) and no water sources, so bring a 3-litre camel bag and avoid hiking during heat waves (the mountain range may be closed due to fire risk).
  • The climb to the summit is physically demanding.

Personally, I love it. This hike is one of my top 5.

A superb hike: varied trails, stunning scenery and breathtaking views. A real treat. It must be said that the temperature was ideal (22°C and slightly overcast). There were no technical difficulties on this hike; only the distance might put some people off. We completed the circular hike in 6 hours and 15 minutes. It was starting to take its toll on the thighs, but I recommend this hike, which allows you to discover the wild side of the Hérault hinterland.

This is a walk I tend to do quite regularly and it’s really lovely, with some stunning views. However, don’t make the same mistake I did: don’t choose a day when the wind is gusting at 130 km/h or more, because on the final stretch you’re completely exposed to the wind, and on that particular day I found myself pinned against the rocks three times, so be careful on windy days.

A lovely, challenging hike

As mentioned in the previous comment, make sure you bring a hat and plenty of water – there’s no shade.
You can have a bite to eat at the top; after the summit there’s grass, a flat area and a few scattered trees.
The first part is really lovely, with vineyards, heath and so on...
The climb in full sun could be gruelling, so do it early in the morning.
I’m not sure if it would be pleasant in summer… the heat…

It took me 8 hours

A very pleasant walk. The ruins of Castellas Castle are well worth a look.
Parking at the church car park is no longer possible. You must park in a car park at the entrance to the village; this adds about 500m there and back and a very slight climb.
Watch out for the fork in the path just after point 4, where you have to leave the track to head towards Font des Grives. It isn’t very visible (and there’s no waypoint) from the track, and we missed it (a short, unnecessary detour).
Our route covered 26.3 km (the difference being due to the points mentioned above and a short round trip to a picnic spot). Total hiking time: 7 hours 50 minutes, including 1 hour 20 minutes of stops. Elevation gain: 1060 m
