Circular walk between Saint-Jean-de-Fos and Le Castellas de Montpeyroux

Starting from the Argileum Museum in Saint-Jean-de-Fos, this walk follows the mountain paths overlooking the Hérault valley. The gradual ascent allows you to discover the typical landscapes of the Mediterranean heath, amongst holm oaks and pines, with unobstructed views of the surrounding hills. The route then reaches the Castellas de Montpeyroux, an ancient hilltop fortified site offering a remarkable panorama of the valley, the vineyards and the foothills of the Larzac. After this stop, the route continues in a circular fashion along other heath trails, passing by thousand-year-old olive trees before descending gently back towards Saint-Jean-de-Fos.

Description of the walk

Start from the Argileum Museum car park , Avenue du Monument.

(S/E) As you leave the car park, turn right onto Avenue du Monument and follow it to the junction with a wayside cross.

(2) Take the path that climbs to the right, towards ‘La Maison des Légendes’, and continue to a junction of tracks with a gate.

(3) Ignore the main track and take the stony path just to the left of the gate.

(4) At the track, continue to the right and you’ll reach a fork about a hundred metres before the ‘Maison des Légendes’ lodge.

(5) Turn left, begin a climb of about 2 km and reach a three-way junction marked by the signpost “Carrefour des Plots”.

(6) Continue along the track to the left and join the second path on the right, situated at a small pass, after covering approximately 2.5 km.

(7) Take the path on the right, which goes uphill and then downhill, until you reach a track.

(8) Take the hairpin bend to the right and follow the track to the Neolithic enclosure on the left, then to the signpost marked “Pioch Canis”.

(9) Turn left and head for the Castellas de Montpeyroux.

(10) Continue along the track until the next junction with stone steps on the left.

(11) Take the steps and follow the path. At the next fork, first turn left then right and continue down the slope to a small road.

(12) Turn left and carry on straight ahead until you reach the second three-way junction.

(13) Turn slightly left and you’ll reach a fork opposite a vineyard.

(14) First turn left then right and walk along the top of this field until you reach an orchard of thousand-year-old olive trees near some ruins on your left.

(15) Continue along the track and then on the tarmac until you rejoin the route you took earlier.

(2) Carry on along the road and, following the route in the opposite direction to the outward journey, head back to the Argileum Museum car park (S/E).
