Mont Billiat from the Chalets de la Buchille

An isolated peak rising to an altitude of nearly 1,900 metres, Mont Billiat offers a splendid 360° panorama and is a lovely hiking destination. Throughout the ascent, there is an extensive view of Lake Geneva.

The (optional) ascent of the Grande Pointe des Journées is a challenging addition reserved for experienced hikers.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Chalets de la Buchille, accessible via the narrow and steep forest road of the same name, which starts at the hamlet of Les Bossons, just before the village of Bellevaux when coming from Thonon-les-Bains via the D26. Park in the small car park in the last right-hand bend, below the chalets (around ten spaces; if there is no space, park further up, near the chalets).

Signposts at major junctions.

(S/E) Take the mountain track heading north towards the Chalets de Pertuis. Climb gently and steadily to the chalets.

(1) At the Chalets de Pertuis, turn right towards Mont Billiat. Climb straight up a ridge before joining it via a left-hand bend.

(2) Continue along the ridge path, then go around an imposing rocky peak on the right. Follow the winding path up a very steep grassy slope, then cross from left to right at the top of the slope. Cross several rocky escarpments equipped with chains to reach the summit ridge (cairn).

(3) Turn left and follow the ridge, which is steep at first until you reach a secondary summit, then gently sloping but narrow until you reach the summit, which is marked by a small metal cross.

(4) Descend to the Chalets de Pertuis by the same route (look out for the cairn that indicates where to leave the summit ridge on the right).

(1) Take the mountain track on the left to descend to the Chalets de la Buchille (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots are essential. Bring plenty of water.

Warning:
- The ascent of Mont Billiat involves crossingrocky escarpments between (1) and (3). Although they are equipped with chains, only attempt this ascent in dry conditions (avoid the day after rain).

Places suitable for a break or picnic:
- Chalets de Pertuis (1).
- Summit of Mont Billiat (4) (be careful of the cliffs, however).

Useful detailed map (at least the one accompanying this description).

Additional information - Ascent of Grande Pointe des Journées:
Coming down from Mont Billiat, at Chalets de Pertuis (1), go between the chalets following the direction of Grande Pointe des Journées (sign). Pass at the foot of an oratory on your right and reach a small ridge. Follow this ridge north-northeast, which is a little steep at first but then flattens out. Turn north, cross a partially wooded area and reach a small pass (not named on the map).
From the small pass, there are two options for reaching the summit of Grande Pointe des Journées:
- Follow the path to the right (east-northeast) that passes under the summit rocks. After about 100 metres, roughly above an isolated spruce tree on the right, veer left to reach the ridge via a trail (you will need to use your hands in places). Then follow the ridge to the left to the summit.
- Follow the same path at the start and, after a few metres, before the first spruce tree on the right, climb up some very steep grassy steps to reach the ridge. Then turn right and climb an easy rock. Follow the ridge to the summit.
Return to the small pass without a name by the same route (or by the other option). Then follow the same route as on the way up in reverse to return to the Chalets de Pertuis.
The ridge of the Grande Pointe des Journées is short but exposed, with a steep drop on its northern side. Access requires a few easy rock climbing steps but on uncomfortable terrain. Be very careful on the ridge and preferably stay on its southern slope. Those who are afraid of tricky passages should avoid this route on the ridge and remain at the small pass (where the view is already very beautiful).

Classic and fast route.
The section with the chains has apparently been rebuilt following a landslide, but it doesn't make any difference; I couldn't see any difference from before.
Beautiful arrival on a ridge with a stunning view.

It's a beautiful hike. Relatively short with a gradual start, ideal for warming up, the second part is steep with a technical section that may impress those who are sensitive to vertigo, but it is well equipped with a handrail in the form of a chain. The final arrival on the ridge towards the summit is very spectacular with a magnificent 360-degree view upon arrival.

Superb 360° view stretching from Mont Blanc to La Tournette and Les Dents du Midi, and across Switzerland opposite Mont Billiat. Do not take anyone who is prone to vertigo, as the technical section can be difficult and spoil your outing. However, the safety chains are very good and the walk is definitely worth the detour.

Hello, everyone
A very beautiful hike.
The advice to avoid this hike in wet weather is entirely justified.
We strongly advise against taking small children, as the rocky section with chains and then the path along the ridge are not suitable for little ones, unless they are roped up.
A magnificent 360° panorama that photographers will appreciate.
On your way back to the Buchille chalets, stop by the refreshment bar, where the owners' smiles and friendliness will accompany your ice cream and cold drinks.
Enjoy your walk.

Hello,
We loved it!
It is indeed best avoided in rainy weather as it can quickly become almost impassable and dangerous.
This hike requires effort and sure footing (rocky passages with chains), but it is fairly short and offers breathtaking views...
No problem bringing dogs along, we did it with two energetic dogs (a border collie and a hunting dog).
We recommend it 200%!

A somewhat physically demanding hike, but the difficulty is worth it for the beautiful 360° view. Above all, make sure you wear suitable footwear.

A very beautiful hike with stunning views: of Lake Geneva during the climb, and of the Alps once you reach the top.
A few sections are a little technical: passages over rocks (with a chain to help you) and over a ridge at the end (with a drop on either side, so not for those who are afraid of heights!).

Beautiful views throughout the climb.
The warning about steep sections (avoid after rain) is justified.
I did not use the route, as I use AlpineQuest.
