Mont d'Hermone and Montagne des Soeurs from Vailly

This hike offers superb panoramic views of Lake Geneva and follows the entire ridge line of a modestly high peak. This circular route offers a more original and varied approach than the usual climb from the Col du Feu. Some sections require caution.

Description of the walk

Depart from Vailly, at a place called La Côte. Pass La Côte-d'en-Haut and park at the intersection of the road and a forest track, before the "Impasse" sign (parking spaces are available on the sides of the road or forest track).

Directional signs are present at all major intersections. Most are old and made of wood, others are more recent and made of modern materials.

Without signposts
There are a few old markers, which are only indicated here when necessary.

(S/E) Follow the forest track towards Notre-Dame d'Hermone. Climb steadily, passing La Grange au Riond on your right, until you reach a hairpin bend to the left.

(1) Continue along the track, turning left towards Le Plansuet/Hermone. Ignore two paths, one uphill on the right and one downhill on the left. At a fork, take the steep, stony path on the right.

(2) Exit the forest and climb more gently to the Plansuet chalets. Go through a gate and pass between the chalets. Pass a drinking trough on your left, then a tree with a yellow marker on your right. Go through a second gate.

(3) When you exit the gate, head straight ahead, due south, across a pasture (there is no path here; the IGN map is inaccurate). Aim for a patch of meadow to the right of a group of spruce trees and you will find a trail. Turn right towards a signpost. Then turn right towards Notre-Dame d'Hermone, follow the tracks along a fence and quickly veer off to the right to find a well-marked path (red round markers). Follow the path to the ridge path.

Red and white markings + signposts with yellow arrows

(4) Follow the path up to the left, passing a superb viewpoint over Lake Geneva (on the right) and quickly arriving at the Hermone Chapel.

(5) Retrace your steps to the intersection.

(4) Continue straight ahead on theGR® Balcon du Léman trail, which follows the Mont d'Hermone ridge in a north-easterly direction. Descend slightly, ignore a path on the right towards Les Combes, then climb back up through the forest. Pass a flat area on the right (view of Mont Billiat) then descend slightly again. Ignore a faint path on the right and climb steeply to reach the summit of Mont d'Hermone.

(6) Continue north-east towards Montagne des Soeurs. Descend, alternating between steep and gentler slopes. You will come to a crossroads marked by a sign saying "Altitude 1260m".

(7) Continue straight on towards Montagne des Soeurs. A few metres below, at a fork, turn right towards Reyvroz (main town) and cross a fence to reach the Montagne des Soeurs mountain pasture. Quickly leave the path to reach the highest point of the pasture on the right, where there is a sweeping view of Lake Geneva.

(8) Retrace your steps to the sign marked "Altitude 1260m".

Yellow markings (usually in the form of a circle)

(7) Take the path on the left towards Vailly/Reyvroz. After a few metres, at a fork, take the right-hand path towards Vailly-La Côte. Heading south-south-west, follow a narrow, poorly marked path downhill, surrounded by vegetation in areas where trees have recently been felled, but better marked under dense forest cover. Be careful not to lose this path and follow the markings, which are conveniently dense on this section.

(9) At signpost no. 32, continue straight on towards Vailly (note that this path and the one leading left towards Palatieu are both marked in yellow). After a short stretch on a narrow path through the vegetation, you will come to a wider path, which you should follow to the right. At signpost no. 31, turn right towards Vailly and you will reach a crossroads (signpost no. 30).

(10) Then take a steep, stony path heading south (note that all the paths here are marked in yellow). Walk along the edge of the forest on your left and a recently cut plot on your right. At a fork (not shown on the IGN map), turn left down a steep slope. Cross a path (not shown on the IGN map) and descend to the forest track taken at the start of the hike.

No markings

(1) Follow the forest track to the left and return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Hiking boots required.

Water source at the Plansuet chalets (3).
Good places to stop for a break or a picnic: Le Plansuet (3); near the Hermone Chapel (5); at Montagne des Soeurs (8).

A 1:25,000 map is essential (at least the one accompanying this description). A compass doesn't weigh much and can be very useful...

Warnings:
- Between Le Plansuet (3) and the next signpost, the route follows no marked path and requires a good sense of direction.
- The descent between (7) and (9) is on a poorly marked and apparently unmaintained path, often surrounded by vegetation and where you have to step over tree trunks in places. This route, which crosses a steep slope, requires constant attention.

Variation and addition:
- Mont d'Hermone alone - At the summit (6), retrace your steps towards the Chapelle d'Hermone. Descend to the Chalets des Combes, with two possible options (not tested by the author but marked on the map or on site): (i) shortly after the summit, at an altitude of 1344 metres, take a faint path on the left; (ii) shortly before the intersection (4), take a signposted path on the left towards Les Combes. At Les Combes, head east-north-east and roughly along the hillside towards Reyvroz and rejoin the main route at (10).
- Hermone Way of the Cross (addition suggested by hiker chouettelesrandos) - At the Hermone chapel (5), continue south-west downhill and follow the Way of the Cross to its starting point. Then climb back up to the chapel via the same path. Allow around 15 minutes for the round trip.

Hike completed by the author on 23 July 2017.

Worth a visit

- Pretty chalets in Plansuet (3).
- Chapel of Hermone (16th-19th century) (5).
- Extensive panoramic views of Lake Geneva from the Hermone Chapel (5) and Montagne des Soeurs (8).
- Viewpoints over the peaks of the Chablais.

A very pretty hike, with some steep climbs and descents in places, but gentler at other times.
In terms of hiking time, it took us 1 hour and 55 minutes to complete.

A lovely walk, mostly in the forest, which was welcome and much appreciated given the heat.
good balance between climbs and descents, beautiful views, even if narrow, except at Montagne des Soeurs

A few minor comments, however
- The 1260 m altitude sign at point 7 seems to have been lost, but there was a sign indicating a trail on the signpost indicating the descent to the left and point 9.
- the path between points 7 and 9 has been completely cleared, so no problems there
- However, I can confirm that there are several tricky junctions on the descent to the starting point. This is made all the more difficult by the fact that the signposts (32, 31) are no longer numbered, so if you don't have GPS, you need to concentrate hard to check where you are on the map and find the right path.

Be careful on the descent: read the guidebook carefully or check your map, as there are a few tricky junctions.
Very pleasant ridge trail (not very steep). Very pretty descent trail.

The description is very precise, and it was easy to follow the route.
We were disappointed by the section between Mont d'Hermone and Montagne des Soeurs: a ridge path on a bumpy forest road with very little view, contrary to our expectations.
Fortunately, when we arrived at Montagne des Soeurs, there was a beautiful view of Lake Geneva and the Chablais Alps.
The path down to Vailly, through the forest, is very pleasant.

Superb hike, lovely view of the lake.
Be careful at point number 2 before returning to the farm, there is an electric fence that you have to remove from the hooks to be able to pass along the path.
Thank you for this hike 👍

We loved this varied hike, which was a bit of a cardio workout but accessible, with sumptuous landscapes.
We took a small fork to the left (at a farm on the forest path a third of the way to point 1) where a sign indicates ND d'Hermone. It's a bit steep, but it allows you to avoid the forest path, which is a bit monotonous at the beginning, if you wish. The picnic at point 8 is ideal because at the chapel (which is also great given the view), you have to take into account that there is still quite a bit of elevation to cover afterwards...
thank you for this beautiful trail, we thoroughly enjoyed it!

Hello FLOFRANVISO,

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry to hear about your various reasons for dissatisfaction.

There are some things we cannot do anything about: lack of signage on site, consequences of forestry work, etc.

Others are our responsibility:
- The fact that the downhill path between points (7) and (9) is subject to a warning (in bold) in the practical information section.
- I can add a message indicating that this section is not suitable for children.
- The time indicated for the route is an estimate, which therefore includes a margin of error. I had indicated an actual time of 4 hours, but this information does not appear. I can add a comment about this.

A pleasant hike offering beautiful scenery and views of Lake Geneva and the Chablais Alps.
However, lack of trail markings, poor condition of the GR5 trail damaged by forestry machinery.
There is a glaring lack of reliable signposting and the trails are poorly maintained (rocky, brambles, roots and dangerous).
Not recommended for young children or elderly people who are not used to steep slopes.
The time required for this route is greatly underestimated.

A very beautiful hike where I was able to take some stunning photos of Thonon, Lake Geneva, the mountains and the Dent d'Oche.
The return trip through the woods is very pleasant, especially when there are blackberries and wild raspberries to eat.
Thank you for this route.

Hike completed with GPS tracking, so no worries about finding your way.
This walk offers beautiful views of Lake Geneva.
The route is very pleasant up to point 7, but after that, you find yourself on a path that is almost non-existent, surrounded by brambles and nettles. The presence of markings and the GPS track confirm that this is indeed the right path, which I would have seriously doubted without these confirmations. Once out of there, you come across a forest that has been completely cleared by logging.
Unfortunately, the end of the hike is much less pleasant than the beginning.

A beautiful hike with views of the lake and mountains, but the small path back is blocked by several trees.
The trail is very clear and welcome on the descent through the woodland.

In fact, today we tested the return journey (for family reasons) via the same route as the outward journey. This obviously shortens the route.
However, I think it's a shame not to offer the short round trip to the Way of the Cross (to the south-west) from the Notre Dame chapel:
i timed it today: 7 minutes to go down and 7 minutes to come back up. It's not very long and it's a shame to miss out on it!
