A beautiful hike above Roquesteron. Magnificent views of the villages of Pierrefeu, Toudon and Mont Vial.

Description of the walk

You can park several cars on the D17 just before the old tram bridge.

(S/E) Marker 114 is a few metres from the car park on the left, heading towards Gilette. The climb is quite steep up to marker 114, with a few tricky sections. At marker 114, turn left and follow the ridge.

(1) Once you reach the track, turn right (on your left is marker 113, of which only the post remains); walk another 10 metres and the path branches off to your left via some steps.
The ridge is lovely and the view is magnificent. Follow the ridge to marker 117.

(2) Turn left. The return route between markers 117 and 118 is on very slippery ground in places. At marker 118, go straight on.

(3) When you reach marker 112, turn left onto the track to find marker 113.

(1) Take the same path back on your right (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 331 m - Parking on the D17 before the old tram bridge - Estéron (rivière)
  2. 1 : km 1.57 - alt. 799 m - Marker 113
  3. 2 : km 4.37 - alt. 825 m - Marker 117
  4. 3 : km 7.34 - alt. 766 m - Marker 112
  5. S/E : km 9.25 - alt. 331 m - Parking on the D17 before the old tram bridge

Notes

After marker 118, the path isn’t very well-used; we had to use secateurs and a saw for almost half the route. Note: I’ve notified the person in charge of this section; they need to come and clear it.

Alternative route:
To avoid the difficult ascent and descent between markers 115 and 113, the best option is to go via markers 111 and 112; this is a track with a much gentler gradient (12% instead of 30%). If you choose this option, I recommend parking on the other side of the bridge on the D1 towards Roquesteron-Grasse, in the car park below.

No water source. Wear sturdy shoes.
The climb is quite difficult and slippery.

Worth a visit

Bar in Roquesteron.

A very quiet route (apart from the wild boars...), easy to follow from the start to point 2.
The path from point 2 to point 3 is not maintained (we didn’t have any secateurs with us that day) and can be a bit tricky to follow, between the vegetation reclaiming its territory and the wild boars wreaking havoc in certain areas.
Can easily be done naked ;-) .

Pruning shears are essential, as there are brambles on the way back. The route description is clear: the ridge is pleasant in winter, whilst the return route on the north-facing slope is less interesting in December but will no doubt be very pleasant when the warmer weather arrives.

It’s a shame that the county council no longer has enough staff to maintain these trails in the regional nature park; even the GR 510 has been neglected – only the Federation is still doing its job.

An interesting hike, but ultimately the path isn’t very clear and there are few or no views on the return journey along the Crête de la Vilette.
It’s clear that these paths are used more by wild boars than by hikers
I did a bit of clearing with my secateurs, but it remains a bit ‘wild’ in places.
For us, we returned via markers 112 /(111) before turning off onto the track leading back to the departmental park car park (where we’d started).
The best view is from the summit of Mt Auvière

Unfortunately, the path back between marker 118 and marker 112 is still just as muddy. It’s becoming very difficult to
follow in some places. The vegetation is gradually obscuring it.

If you live in the area, it’s a brilliant hike with a fantastic view of the whole valley
