Meakako Gaina near Lésaka

The starting point for the hike is on the Banarretako path (Banarretako bidea), near the village of Lesaka. To get there, see the "Practical information" section below.

(S/E) From the car park, take the cement track directly opposite and follow it. Head north-west until you reach a fork.

(1) Turn right and follow the ridge with its numerous hunting posts. You will come to a post.

(2) Continue straight ahead, following the signs for Lesaka Berau.
You will pass the Amargungo Zeharra cromlech tumulus and the Amargungo Zeharra dolmen, just after the building, but they are currently hidden by ferns. You will reach the summit of Meakako (Meakako Gaina) at 362 m.

(3) There is no indication of the summit, except that you then descend.
Turn left, heading due north, following the wire fences marking the boundary of a property. This will take you to a path (^GR®® 11 Senda Pirenaica E37).

(4) Take this path, heading right, to the Margungo Pass.

(5) Take the wide path on the right. Follow this path at a leisurely pace to return to the starting point (S/E).

To get to the starting point near Lesaka by car.
Cross the border at Behobie. At the roundabout, turn left onto the N121-A towards Pamplona.
Take the exit marked "Lesaka". (This is the exit after Bera and just after the hydroelectric power station on the side of the road). You will then be on the NA-1210.
Further on, turn right towards the NA-4000 Lesaka/Oiartzun.
At the roundabout, take the^second exit towards Lesaka.
In the town, due to a no-entry sign, you must turn right.
At the stop sign, turn right and continue straight on this road (which is the NA-4000 or Bittiria Kalea and becomes Arratzubi kalea).
Just after the Accelor Mittal factory (i.e. after kilometre 3), take the road on the right towards the Sagardotegia Lindurrenborda cider house. You are now on Banarretako bidea.
After the cider house car park, at the junction, take the left-hand road to stay on Banarretako bidea.
The road climbs and after a bend you will pass a cattle grid. You will then come to a junction with several roads. Stop here and park on the left so as not to obstruct anyone. There is a large pylon at this point. (You are at coordinates approximately Long: -1.71885 and Lat: 43.25920).

For information: from Saint-Jean de Luz, it is about a 28 km drive, taking 30 minutes.

Given the presence of numerous hunting posts, do not go on this hike during the wood pigeon hunting season.
