Matmore Gate to Springfields via Coronation Channel Spalding

This easy short walk along the Coronation Channel has many water birds to observe, Crested Grebe, Ducks, Swans, Herons sometimes Cormorants. Springfields is a major shopping outlet has all the facilities, coffee shops and lovely gardens to take a short break.

Coronation Channel was created in 1953 following major flooding of Spalding following heavy rains rising River Welland coupled with a very high tide, so this relief channel was dug.

Start: Park in Matmore Gate (PE11 2PN). Grid ref. TF 255 221

(S/E) Continue East along Matmore Gate with school playing fields on your left, when Matmore Gate bends to the left continue straight up wide track.

(1) On reaching Coronation Channel turn immediately left onto the path following the channel, continue following the channel for 1.5 Km crossing a road and eventually reaching A151 with St. Paul's church on your left.

(2) Carefully cross A151 and turn right crossing the channel and proceeding down to a roundabout, turn left into the road to Springfields Shopping Outlet. Immediately cross over using the pedestrian island to aid crossing. Turn left and continue down the road to Springfields.

(3) Here you can take time to use toilets, cafes etc. On the far side East, there are nice gardens to sit in before returning. Leave Springfields the same way as you came in. Walk back to the island, cross over A151, and turn right up to the channel.

(4) This time, turn left before the bridge to walk on the path on the opposite side of the one you took earlier. Continue along the channel crossing three roads and at the fourth road turn right and cross over the bridge, Spalding Drove.

(5) After crossing, turn right to gain the path along the channel and continue past one road before reaching another bridge.

(1) At the bridge, turn left down a wide track to return to Matmore Gate and your original starting point. (S/E)

Parking: Park in Matmore Gate (PE11 2PN) taking care not to block any driveways. Alternatively, you can park and Springfields and start at the waypoint (3). There is a charge for parking.

Facilities: Springfields has Cafe's and Toilets.
