Birchgrove circular via River Glen and Park Lane

A pleasant route on minor roads and good footpaths in South Lincolnshire and the fenlands, with different aspects in the seasons of the agricultural year on show. Lovely views from the footpath alongside the river Glen part of the Macmillan Way.

Description of the walk

The starting point is the car park of Birchgrove Garden Centre (PE11 3XY)

(S/E) Exiting the garden centre, turn right and walk along the verge for 100 metres, then turn right onto Herdgate Lane. Stay on Herdgate then, after about 800 metres, turn left onto Old Hall Lane. After 500 metres, turn right at the T junction onto White Cross Lane. After a further 700 metres, turn sharp left onto Wood's Lane.

(1) Turn right off Wood's Lane onto the signposted footpath. After a short distance, cut across to the footpath with houses on both sides and following a ditch on your left. After 300 metres, turn left to reach main road B1356, where you turn right and follow the pavement.

(2) Just before the bridge, follow the signposted footpath descending to the right, and turn right to follow River Glen. Follow the River Glen for about 2 kilometres.

(3) Turn right (do not go down the steps under A16) to continue following the footpath with A16 to your left for about 150 metres. Then turn right onto Park Lane for about 700 metres. Then turn left with the house on the corner. Continue down Park Lane for 500 metres, passing a road on your left. Reach a fork in the road, take the left fork to return via White Cross Lane. Just before the main road, take a left turn into Old Hall Lane and then at the T junction turn right onto Herdgate Lane to eventually reach the main road. Turn left and return to Birchgrove Garden centre along the verge.(S/E)
