Mandeure - Pont-de-Roide

This stage is the first stage of the Grande Traversée du Jura (or GTJ). It is the easiest. It can be done in a morning and can be combined with the next stage, which goes to Saint-Hippolyte. Most of the route is through forest. The starting point is in Mandeure. A detour to the Gallo-Roman theatre allows you to start with a touch of history. After an hour's walk, the stage passes near the Mandeure viewpoint before continuing through the forest. There are a few open spaces, but they are rare. The descent to Pont-de-Roide is then short and quick.

Description of the walk

Departure from the "Fourneaux" bus stop in Mandeure.

No signposts

(S) From the bus stop, turn left to go up Rue du Pont. After the post office, turn left onto Rue Les Montoilles. At the bend, turn right towards the cemetery and continue until you reach it.

Marked "GTJ"

(1) Cross the cemetery and continue to the crossroads towards the Gallo-Roman theatre.

PR® markings

(2) Turn right (IGN maps are out of date at this point). Once at the top, turn right towards the Notre-Dame de Bonsecours Chapel. At the chapel, take the path that descends to the left and curves around. At the bottom, after the building, turn left to visit the theatre.

(3) Then return to the GTJ (Grande Traversée du Jura) junction.

"GTJ" signpost

(2) Turn right. Pass a fork in the road and some farm buildings on your left and continue to Coteau du Fays.

(4) Turn right onto Chemin des Roches. Then turn left at the next junction. At the bend, keep to the right. Ignore the GR®-type path that branches off to the left on the maps: it does not exist. You will reach a fork in the road.

(5) Keep straight ahead. Then pass a path on the left and two others on the right to climb up a sort of "firebreak" and reach a fork.

(6) Turn 90° to the right. At the edge of the cliff, climb up to the left along it. Leave the paragliding take-off area on your right and reach a promontory above the void, which offers a view of Mathay and the Doubs.

(7) With the promontory on your right, keep going straight ahead. At the second viewpoint, stay along the cliff, passing a crossroads. Then turn right and reach an intersection.

(8) Leave the descending path and climb left into a meadow (the IGN maps are obsolete at this point). At the track, turn right and then climb again on the left. At the edge of the woods, turn right to reach the entrance to the motocross track.

(9) Follow the road. Leave the access to Chassagne on your right and cross the Bois de Jeanney to reach a Y-junction.

(10) Turn right to begin the descent to Pont-de-Roide. Pass a path on the left, then a house on the same side, and reach a path with a farm gate.

(11) Turn sharply left and go through the gate. Pass a path on the left, then a second, more discreet path, and finally a third to reach the ruins of Chambadon.

(12) Turn right and descend on the left. At the four-way fork, descend straight ahead to a wide track.

(13) Turn completely left and stay on the track that descends opposite to the sports fields, ignoring all intersections.

(14) Turn right onto Rue du Stade. Turn left twice, staying on the same street. Continue to Ruisseau du Roide.

(15) Stay on the path that runs alongside the Doubs. Follow the river upstream to the motorhome area. Cross it, then climb up to the left near the Maison Pour Tous building and reach the bus stop of the same name (slightly before the one marked on OSM maps) (E).

Notes

This stage can be completed as a day trip independently of the others. To do so, park in the Crédit Agricole car park in Mandeure. With your back to the car park, turn right onto Rue du Pont. Walk up the street to the "Fourneaux" bus stop (S). Then follow the suggested route and, at the end point (E), take the H bus towards Audincourt. Get off at the "Fourneaux" bus stop (S). Then walk down the street to the car park.

Refreshments/food available in Mandeure (S) and Pont-de-Roide (E).

Some sections are obsolete on IGN maps: access to the Mandeure theatre between (1) and (3) is a little before that shown on the maps, the shortcut to (5) does not exist and the GR® has been diverted to (8).

Benches or tables are available at the Mandeure theatre (3) and the Belvédère de Mandeure (7).
