Route de découverte de Montbéliard

Located in Franche-Comté, the town of Montbéliard has a strong heritage. Its most famous site remains its castle. But there is also artistic and natural heritage, such as the Près-la-Rose. This route passes close to numerous museums, such as the Pavillon des Sciences and its workshop, as well as Montbéliard Castle. This walk also allows you to discover Saint-Martin’s Temple, Saint-Maimbœuf Church, and Saint-Georges Lutheran Church. Of course, before returning to the car, don’t hesitate to pick up the famous Montbéliard sausage.

Description of the walk

Park at the Champ de Foire car park

(S/E) Head towards the Pont Armand Bermont and cross the Allan. At the end, facing the car park, walk along the right-hand side of it, then keep to the right onto Rue Charles Contejean. At the bend, turn left onto Quai des Tanneurs. Then take the second street on the right, Rue Jules Viette. Just after the first junction, pass the church called "La Bonne Nouvelle" on your left, and head straight on, onto Rue de la Synagogue.

(1) At the end of this street, continue along it until you reach the chapel known as "Armée du Salut". Turn right, then immediately left onto Avenue du Président Wilson. Then turn right onto Rue des Blancheries to reach the footbridge over the Allan.

(2) Cross the river and, after the footbridge, take the path on the right onto the Île du Près-la-Rose. Then continue straight ahead until you reach the Fontaine de Galilée.

(3) Continue straight ahead, then keep to the right. At the next two junctions, turn left, then right at the third, to return to the fountain.

(3) Walk past the fountain and take the path on the right. Continue straight ahead until you reach the second path on the left. Take this path to reach the Singing Megalith.

(4) Turn back and take the path on the left at the junction. At the “roundabout”, take the path on the other side, going round the roundabout on the left. At the car park, walk along the right-hand side of it, then take the greenway on the left. At the next fork, turn left to reach the railway bridge. Just before the bridge, turn left to walk alongside the Allan, and continue to the footbridge over the river, staying close to the bank. Cross the river and reach the end of the footbridge.

(2) Turn left, then immediately right onto Chemin des Blancheries. At the end, head straight ahead to enter a park.

(5) Enter the park and turn left. At the monument, continue to the right, then left again at the next fork. When you reach Rue de Belfort, turn left to reach the cultural plaque on the Hôtel de Franquemont.

(6) Head back and, at the end of Rue de Belfort, turn left onto Rue des Tours. When you reach Esplanade des Princes, turn left, then left again onto Rue du Bourg Vauthier. Then head up to the left onto Rue du Château. At the esplanade, take in the panoramic view of the whole of Montbéliard, then head towards the castle.

(7) Then head back the same way to the Esplanade des Princes. Walk straight ahead for a few metres, then turn left up Avenue Aristide Briand towards the station. Keep the station on your right and take Rue Georges Cuvier directly opposite. Cross Place Albert Thomas and continue along the street until you reach the entrance to the Hôtel Beurnier-Rossel.

(8) Continue, then at the next junction, turn right onto Rue des Étaux. Then go round the Temple Saint-Martin on the right, passing in front of the town hall. At the corner of Rue Laurillard, take this street, then continue right onto Passage de la Fleur. At the end, turn left onto Rue Georges Clemenceau. Then, keep left to follow this street until you reach Rue des Fèbvres. Turn right onto this street, then turn right onto Rue des Halles. Hello,

Thank you for this route. The Lutheran church of Saint Martin reopened in April 2026 after five years of renovation work. It is the oldest Protestant church still standing outside the Alsace-Moselle region. All the others were destroyed by Louis XIV. Those in Montbéliard escaped the destruction because the region was then under the rule of the Dukes of Württemberg.
