Description of the walk

The starting point is in the village of Locmaria, at the foot of the church, Place de Meaudre.

The GR® is very well marked. The markings are red and yellow or red and white.

(S) Leave the church on your left, go down the road (Chemin de Port Maria) and you will reach Port Maria.

(1) Follow the coastal path on the left (red and white markings) and go around the beach on the left. Further on, you will reach Pointe de Kerzo.

(2) Continue along the coastal path, ignoring all the paths on the left. You will come to a small road.

(3) Follow it to the right, passing Queen Victoria's Cove, Fortin de Port-Andro and the large beach at Port-Andro. At the crossroads (car park on the left), turn right and follow the road for about 50 metres.

(4) Then take the coastal path on the right. Before Pointe de Kerdonis, turn left to rejoin the road.

(5) Follow it to the right. You will see the small Kerdonis fort on your right. Head towards it.

(6) After passing the fort (lighthouse on the left), take the path that descends to the right. At the bottom, turn left and from there you will see the islands of Houat (on the left) and Hoëdic (on the right) on the horizon. Walk along the beach below and, further on, the beach of Porh Huelen. You will reach Pointe de la Biche.

(7) Continue along the coastal path, passing a small car park on your left and the Samzun housing estate. You will come to a road.

(8) Walk along Grands Sables Beach (bus stop, car park, campsite). You will see some old German fortifications.

(9) At the end of the beach, leave the road and take the path on the right. The path turns left and then takes a very short section of road, accessible by car, to the right. You will arrive at Pointe du Bugul (a beautiful, shaded and peaceful spot with the Bugul battery; view to the left over Port Yorc'h and, at the end, Pointe du Gros Rocher).

(10) Turn left and continue along the coastal path. You will rejoin the road further on, at Port Yorc'h beach, and follow it to the right for a few dozen metres.

(11) Leave the road and take the coastal path again on the right. At a crossroads (pumping station on the left), turn right to reach the foot of the Redoute du Gros Rocher.

(12) Turn left onto the coastal path. Walk along Bordadoué beach and ignore all the paths on the left. You will arrive at Belle Fontaine - Aiguade Vauban (visible through a gate).

(13) Turn right (north-west) and walk past Fort Larron. You will arrive at Port Guen Beach (car park).

(14) Go around the beach, follow a road to the right for a few dozen metres and rejoin the coastal path to continue along the coast, heading north to Pointe de Ramonette.

(15) We rejoin the road and walk along Crique des Armels and then the small beach at Ramonette. We continue until we reach the town walls at Porte de Locmaria.

(16) Turn right at a sharp angle to reach the viewpoint overlooking the harbour and the citadel. Here stands a memorial dedicated to those lost at sea.

(17) Descend to the left along a path that joins the road (Rue des Remparts). Continue along Rue de l'Escalier to reach the junction with Rue Jules Simon and the Palais landing stage (E).

I completed the entire tour of Belle Ile en Mer on the GR 370 coastal route. At the end of September, the route is still very popular with hikers. The route is quite physically demanding for those who are not sufficiently prepared, as I saw with some elderly people who had to interrupt their hike due to physical problems. The coastal path offers beautiful views of the rugged coastline, with its enormous granite boulders and the ocean. The microclimate that prevails on this Breton island is very real, and the sun was generous with me throughout the week. The island is well served by buses and getting around is easy. I particularly recommend this hike outside the summer season. The island has 5,200 year-round residents and 460,000 visitors during the summer...

Stage 5, fairly short and without any significant elevation gain, with good weather offering beautiful views of Hoedic and Houat, a stop for swimming and lunch on Prh Huelen beach.

The entire Belle Île circuit is moderately difficult, especially at the start, but the finish is easier going. There are some beautiful beaches along the route where you can stop and go for a swim if you wish.

It's Belle Île en Mer...
What more can I say?!
It's enchanting, impossible to get lost.
However, don't think it's flat just because it's by the sea. It's often windy on the cliffs, but the valleys and coves can sometimes be very warm.
Walking around the island is something every walker should do at least once in their lifetime.
