Description of the walk

The walk starts at the car park opposite the Aiguilles de Port Coton.
You can get to the Aiguilles de Port Coton by bus, on line 2.

GR® 340 - Marked in red and yellow or red and white.

(S) Note the Goulphar lighthouse on the left. Take the coastal path directly to the right.

(1) A little further on, a small white building called "Sirène de Belle Île" stands on the right; this is the island's foghorn. You will arrive at the Le Grand Large hotel on the left.

(2) The path continues and a little further on, go around Port Goulphar, leaving it on your right. On the left is the island's thalassotherapy centre and spa, Castel Clara. Continue along the jagged coastline for several kilometres, passing the Îles de Domois, the Pointe du Talut with its semaphore, and arrive at Kérel Beach and its car park.

(3) Go around it and you will find yourself facing a rocky islet, Île de Bangor.

(4) Continue along several beaches in quick succession: Yeyew, Dotchot, then Herlin Beach (supervised beach). A car park provides direct access by vehicle. Continue on to Baluden Beach, which is smaller and also has a car park nearby.
Then head to Pointe de Saint-Marc, with the Grotte de Saint-Marc and the Rocher de la Pointe de Saint-Marc on your right, and Port Gwenn on your left.

(5) Continue to Port Pouldon cove.

(6) Go around it, keeping it on your right, and continue straight along the coastal path where you can slow down and make a return trip to Pointe de Pouldon, a protected natural site, to admire the view.
After a few kilometres, you will arrive at Pointe du Skeul, where there is a car park.

(7) The Porthos Cave is located on the right side of the point. Near the rock at Pointe du Skeul, a memorial stone was erected following the sinking of a Houat fishing boat in 2012.
Pass Pointe d'Arzic and then, just after, Port Blanc beach, with a slipway and car park.

(8) Go back up to the road and turn right. The walk continues to Port Maria beach.

(9) At Port Maria, before taking the road towards the village of Locmaria, you can continue along theGR®340to reach Le Palais.
Follow the road up the valley to reach the small village of Locmaria. (E)

Wear hiking boots, high-top if necessary, as there are uphill and downhill sections.
Walking sticks are permitted, but must have tips.

There are no drinking water points or toilets along this route.
There are toilets at the finish in Locmaria.

At Kérel beach, you can walk a little further to reach the village of Bangor, where you can stock up on supplies, eat, sleep, etc.

This is the longest of the four stages ofthe GR®340. It is therefore possible to split this stage into two, for example:

  • From Herlin beach to Locmaria.

Stage we completed in 2 days
1: Coton - Herlin: very pretty, not very difficult and fairly short. Bus 2 km from the trail
2: Herlin - Locmaria: very pretty but longer and more hilly
Lovely beach to wait for the bus at Port Maria

Hello
On Visorando, I created the route between Les Aiguilles Coton and Locmaria to put it on my phone, and I can't find the 900 m elevation gain... The others match, but not this one.
Thank you for your response.

Wonderful hike. We went swimming at Kérel Beach in an exceptional setting. We went as far as Herlin Beach, as we had to get to the bus stop quite early at this time of year. We avoided the difficult section towards Pointe de Skeul. Perhaps the description should mention that this section is difficult, whereas the rest of the hike is accessible.

Hello, this part of the Belle Île tour is simply magnificent. The landscapes, colours and cliffs are breathtaking.
We stopped at Skeul because we were tired (2/4 😉). Even though we were riding very close to the sea, there were a lot of climbs and descents in quick succession. (done on 10 September 2023)
Thank you for sharing.
