Description of the walk

To get to the starting point, from Noirétable follow the D53 towards Vollore-Montagne, then the D101 towards La Chamba. Then follow theD1015 to the right and head towards Notre-Dame de l'Hermitage.

(S/E) With your back to the buildings, take theGR® 3 (parallel to theD1015) heading south. A barrier marks the entrance to the path leading to the chapels.

(1) Cross the stream "Le Lignon" and continue until you reach a small clearing. Turn left to reach the Croix Saint-Guillaume.

(2) Facing the cross, turn a quarter turn to the right (east) and head towards the entrance to the path leading to the Lit de la Vierge (path located between the departmental boundary and theGR® 3 on the IGN map). The entrance to the path is marked on the left by a tree trunk painted blue and on the right by a tree trunk bearing the number 1 in red on a white square background.
Follow the path for about 400 metres, now marked by blue ribbons attached to the branches and/or blue marks on the tree trunks. Turn right (blue arrow) and you will reach the chaos in about 100 metres.

A sign (at last!) at the foot of the granite chaos indicates "Lit de la Vierge" (Virgin's Bed), points out the panoramic view and warns of the slippery nature of the rocks. In dry weather, you still need to use your hands.
Climb to the top via a fairly steep ascent with narrow passages between the boulders. At the top, admire the 360° panoramic view.

(3) Descend carefully and return to Notre-Dame de l'Hermitage via the same route (S/E).

Notes

Alternative route:
(3) To extend the walk to the Pas de la Vierge, return to the Croix Saint-Guillaume (2) and take theGR® 3 on the left (white and red markings). A sign indicates that the Pas de la Vierge is a 20-minute walk away (approximately 1 km). A rock in the middle ofthe GR® 3 trail bears the mark of a footprint. Return to the Croix Saint-Guillaume and begin your return journey to Notre-Dame de l'Hermitage.

The time shown for the route does not include the 35-minute round trip to Pas de la Vierge.

For more information, visit the Vollore montagne website.

To take advantage of the many walking opportunities in the surrounding area (Pierre Pamole, Grun de Chignore, Megaliths at Noirétable, etc.), I recommend staying at the "Lodge de la Source" in Noirétable. It is a relaxing place located at an altitude of 870 metres, from which you can see Mont Blanc on a clear day, according to the owner.

Megaliths of Noirétable: see Visorando file L'Autel de la Baronnie and the oak tree of La Gilbernie (author: Grandin).

Worth a visit

• The chapel located upstream: around fifteen black crosses mark the graves of the missionaries of Notre-Dame de la Salette.
• The chapel located downstream: the stream flows under the chapel and the water gushes out in front of it into a small circular basin, with a constant temperature of 6 to 7°C.
• Saint-Guillaume Cross erected in 1780 (boundary between Noirétable and Vollore-Montagne marked by boundary stones at the foot of the cross).
• View of Noirétable from one of the Peyrotine rocks topped with a white cross.

Quite a few people on the trail at the beginning of September. Well shaded when it was very hot. Difficult to locate the cross of Saint Guillaume, which is modest in size and slightly set back on the left.

@usuul
As for the Virgin's Step, it's a way of not turning back straight away and thus prolonging the walk in the shade. I completely agree with you... it's not as interesting as the granite chaos.
Good luck in this area, which is full of pleasant walks with no particular difficulties.

Pleasant shade, the hook by the Virgin's step is not very interesting (in my opinion). The Virgin's bed is superb.

Thank you for your comment, BALADEZ.
There are many walks to enjoy in the area (not too long or too steep) that are not very busy.

We wish you all the best in this magnificent region.

A very pleasant hike, shaded and family-friendly overall. Beautiful views. Cool despite the hot weather in the surrounding area. Great view from the hermitage. Lots of people in the first car park, but shaded spaces available in the second.
Very few hikers encountered. Done on a Sunday.

Good evening,
Thank you for your feedback. During our stay, it was the owner of the lodge who advised us to go for a walk to Lit de la Vierge. However, she told us that it wasn't easy to find because it isn't well signposted. Fortunately, a hiker we met on a walk before the one to Lit de la Vierge gave us directions (follow the blue ribbons after the cross).

I hope you are enjoying the lodge (there's nothing like it for recharging your batteries ). If you are still there at the moment, would you mind telling the owner that, as promised, I have advertised her lodge, which is well worth it (stay from 13 to 20 July - 4 people from the Pyrénées-Atlantiques)?

Best regards

Very good description. And I'm staying at the Lodge de la Source as recommended in the description.
