Description of the walk

Start at the Place de l’Église in Lichtenberg. An easy, pleasant walk, sometimes on a soft, unchallenging path, sometimes on a forest track. Little elevation gain, except towards the end. Well-signposted route (Red Rectangle).

(S) Setting off from Lichtenberg, with the Place de l’Église on your left, turn right onto Rue de l’Église, walk down Rue du Château and turn left onto Rue Vogelhardht.

(1) Follow this street until, at the end, you take a path on the left. Walk on almost level ground, continuing straight ahead until you reach the road.

(2) Carry on straight ahead, keeping to level ground, until you reach the D181.

(3) Walk along it on the left before turning right onto a path. Continue in the same direction, crossing a road to reach Rue des Sapins, which you should take to the left. Continue towards Rue de Lichtenberg.

(4) Turn left, crossing the railway line. When you can no longer go straight on, turn left to reach Rue Principale. Turn right onto it, then, about a hundred metres further on, turn left uphill, walking past the Swiss House (half-timbered).

(5) After the Swiss House, turn left onto a meadow before entering the forest. At the junction, follow the track to the left towards Ochsenstall. Leave the track on the left and follow the path towards Ochsenstall. Continue straight on until you reach the junction with the Blue Cross path, situated below the Englishberg.

(6) Carry on straight ahead to the clearing and the Ochsenstall rock.

(7) Turn left, then keep to the right. Continue straight ahead towards the houses for about thirty minutes. Enter Erckartswiller via the Chemin du Laeger, passing the Théodore-Monod Centre.

(8) Carry on straight ahead to the bridge at the end of Rue Principale.

(9) Turn left (Rue de La Petite-Pierre), then immediately right. The walk becomes a little steeper as you climb towards La Petite-Pierre. Continue along the path straight ahead, climbing towards the road, passing between two impressive rocks.

(10) Take the road on the right and head towards Kirchberg. Follow the street of the same name to reach Rue Principale in La Petite-Pierre.

(11) Turn left onto the street, then keep to the right. Pass a cul-de-sac, then head up to the right towards the Maison du Pays de La Petite-Pierre, very close to the Staedtel, the old village (E).

The only problem we encountered – and once again further along the GR5 between Struthof and Hohwald – was that the FERAUD path was closed due to forestry work. No information was available and there were few alternative routes!

The third and final day of my hike, bringing my five-stage crossing of the Northern Vosges to a close.
The first stage of the day once again takes in forest paths and trails towards La Petite-Pierre.
It’s an ideal hike if you want to walk briskly or jog.
After the village of Wimmenau, I had a pleasant chat with an experienced blueberry picker (yes, that’s when they’re in season in this part of the world), but I didn’t have the time or the chance to discover the secret picking spots.
A lovely path through the ferns, passing through areas where the trees are struggling a bit before reaching Petite-Pierre.
